Hi.

I'm currently running ClearOS 5.1 as my domain control for a small (20 user) domain. I was holding off on ebox until the SAMBA portions matured a bit. I just came back today to see 1.4 is out and from my recollection that should mean PDC/BDC support.

I don't see the specifics I'm looking for in the LDAP section of the docs. I also don't see anything specifically talking about setup as a backup domain controller and the info on PDC setup is for a new network from scratch.

My question is, can I setup an ebox machine and then attach it to the ClearOS's PDC to get the LDAP databases for the domain synced up and then have the ebox machine take over? It would essentially be like setting up ebox as a BDC and then promoting it.

I am not polished enough on SAMBA and LDAP to know how to do this via command line. I wish I could have waited for ebox to be ready but our Windows domain controller was failing and at the time, ebox wasn't fitting the bill since there was no BDC functionality and my testing of restoring form failure on ebox weren't working out.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I know that setting up from the start is the best option but I already but my users through a domain move about 6 months ago and really don't think it's an option to do it again at this point.

Installation and Upgrades / Updating Ebox stable...
« on: December 24, 2009, 05:08:35 pm »
Logged into the server as an admin I see after an apt-get update/upgrade cycle that there are several packages that need to be updated and several more that are "held back".

I haven't upgraded anything because I fear it will break something with ebox. I've installed fresh from the ebox_installer-1.2-5.iso image.

What brought this to my attention was the message on the Antivirus panel:

Antivirus Database Update Status
Status:    Update successful but your freshclam version is outdated. The antivirus will not be able to use all the signatures. Please, install version 0.95.3 or higher.
Date:    Thu Dec 24 10:18:57 2009

I'm running this as a 100% internal box right now so I'm not horribly worries, but what is the regular policy on getting updates? I don't see any update capabilities in the management panels and even the automatic security updates is disabled by default.

Installation and Upgrades / Help setting up two eboxes
« on: December 21, 2009, 05:12:05 pm »
If I want to use a nice new piece of hardware with lots of RAM and hard drive to be a simple, but fast, file server...

and an older piece of hardware to be a domain controller to authenticate my network users who will use said file server...

would I be best served installing ebox on both of them and having the file server use the authentication db on the other or perhaps installing windows or debian/ubuntu or ??? on the file server and setting up shares based on the others' auth?

Installation and Upgrades / Installing the 1.3 beta
« on: October 10, 2009, 07:24:12 pm »
I'm having a hard time finding an image for the beta and searching for documentation on how to install it is turning up fruitless.

Can anyone point me in that direction? Can I just do an update from a console in 1.2?

Installation and Upgrades / Which Components are needed?
« on: July 28, 2009, 10:08:50 pm »
If I simply want to setup a machine to handle logins for my local network (i.e. PDC) and run email/eGroupware what components are needed? I would also want users to be able to securely check their email from outside of our local network.

I'm wondering what the bare minimums are and then perhaps what suggestions anyone has to ease management/troubleshooting of the domain.

Thanks,
E

Hi,

I've been scanning these forums and searching for practical reviews online for about a month now. Most of what I've found is fairly positive. I'm hoping someone with a similar experience can answer a couple of questions.

First, let me give a background of my current situation. I'm running a small network (~15 users/~25 machines). Windows Server 2003 is in place with AD running for authentication. The only thing we're really using AD for is authentication for logins and file sharing.

The one thing I'm not clear on is if eBox will allow shares on a variety of file servers to be authenticated from the central LDAP or if it can only handle authentication for files it's serving.

I'd also like a little clarification on how/whether a backup LDAP server is synchronized with the primary so that in case of hardware failure, access is maintained.

Any answers or pointers to documents I've missed would be greatly appreciated.
