Hello Bernhard

Have you had any success with this issue? I am looking at an EGW 1.8 install, and would like to base it on Zentyal.

The approach I have considered was to setup Zentyal as a separate machine, hosting users/email services, then have EGW on its own basic Debian or Ubuntu server install, with external connection to Zentyal for user authentication. The problem I end up with is 2 machines that present some problems with file sharing & synchronization, as some folks really don't like the upload/download through browsers for file management in EGW, but wish to still tie files & folders to projects & task assignments.

The ideal is to have it as an all-in-one server, that require minimal intervention, as I will have to pass administration on to others at some point.

thanks
Ken

Hi
I am testing an EGW 1.8 install for a group of about 40 staff, and have already got it working once on ClearOS, with the drawback that once you start using EGW to manage users, it kills the ability to use the ClearOS web interface to manage users. (LDAP userbase - there is a slight diff btw Clear & EGW in their respective schema)

I was wondering if anyone here is using the latest EGW on Zentyal, and has encountered this sort of problem. If you have a good working Zen/EGW install, could you please share the recipe?

I would prefer to use Zentyal as I am much more comfortable working on Debian, that the super custom CentOS based ClearOS.

howdy all

Just a quick update. I solved this by using vino from ubuntu repos. It won't show up on the lxde menu, but run in terminal
Code: [Select]
admin@myserver:~$vino-passwd
to set password for access, then

Code: [Select]
admin@myserver:~$vino-preferences
to pop-up a control panel where you can enable remote access

Installation and Upgrades / VNC server works for root, not for user

Howdy

Just tinkering with remote access to Zentyal desktop, and have an odd situation. Installed tightvncserver, and it works if I launch sudo, but I would prefer to get it working as the default user account created at install. If I launch as default user, all I get is a grey screen with no functionality.

It would also be preferable if I was accessing the "working desktop" rather than spawning a new vnc/xsession. I am tinkering with virtualbox, and launching the VBox console as any other user does not show any VM's that are already running.

I know I can manage my VM's from the command-line, but I am am just experimenting with a bunch of pre-configured appliances, and can work much more quickly through the virtualbox GUI.

TIA

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Setting up Zafara
« on: October 14, 2010, 10:27:49 pm »
Thanks for the info.

I will have to get this puppy working for T-bird, Imail(?), Outlook, web, Entourage because I have little/no control over the computers accessing the service. The solution I am looking for MUST include resource booking (ie meeting rooms, vehicles, tools).

Zimbra, Zarafa, et al do a kludgy "non-active user" account whose calendar can be updated by other users with appropriate permissions. While workable, it is not optimal.

I was disappointed to see that Zentyal is dropping Egroupware for this reason - I understand it because it is a royal Pain-in-the-arse to get eGroup sorted for general user access, but it offers better resource management and ancillary applications. Ebox was the only distro I found that allowed me to get eGroupware running without building a new server from scratch & going through all the pain of apache, php, mysql, email server install & configuration first.

Ah well - If I actually had any skills I would take them up on the request for an eGroupware/Zentyal maintainer. Then again, if I had the skills I wouldn't need to rely on a solution like Zentyal/eBox. :-\

 sorry for the rant

Installation and Upgrades / Setting up Zafara

Howdy

I am testing Zarafa for a possible roll-out as a groupware server, and while I understand that detail configuration info should be searched for at the Zarafa site, I am disappointed with the lack of critical (to me) info regarding creation of resource accounts for reservation purposes. In the Zarafa admin docs, they explain to create a 'non-active' user, but do not give any detail about how this account can be configured so that certain users or certain groups can view the calendar, and impose a schedule (book a resource for a meeting) without logging into the account and accepting the invite.

There is lots of command-line snippets, but I would also worry about breaking any configs set up by the Zentyal admin console.

This was one area I found a little better considered & featured, if not well implemented, in egroupware. No need to set up fake users to create bookable resources.

Has anyone here already sorted this, and willing to explain it in "zarafa for dummies"?

Thanks for the guide...saved a lot of time for initial config...I can tinker from there. I was just providing a bit of feedback.

Maybe I am jinxed when it comes to recipes....many is the time I am following a tutorial or recipe for some task (ie Moodle install, or Ruby-on-rails) and despite the fact that I have printed the instructions out, and ticked each step as completed, about 3/4 of the time, I do NOT get the same result as the author(s). I also have experienced that in the dynamic opensource world, a recipe that is more than a few months old can be staled by fixes, patches, & updates.

Howdy Sam,

tinkered with this yesterday, and was able to GDM login, lxde, firefox icon & menu shortcut all working, but encountered a couple of glitches.

1. vncserver won't start at boot, must be manually loaded; maybe should be "vncserver :9" in the start command, rather than "tightvncserver"
Ensure a Server Session Automatically Starts at Bootup
Edit /etc/rc.local
Add the lines
Code:

# Start TightVNCServer at bootup
su --command="tightvncserver :9"   root

2. when connecting to vnc session, all I get is a grey screen; no lxde panel, no terminal, no right-click menu, etc

3 after a short while, all the GUI applications failed...I could not even logout. I had to <CTRL><ALT><F1> to a terminal session, and kill all X processes.  I have not yet been able to repeat this error, but will try and catch what the sequence was for the next time.

I also would be interested to know the rationale, though I am very happy with eGroupware. I have been test-driving a number of email/groupware solutions over the past 8 months, and my victims (...er, I mean "co-workers") pretty much preffered the eGroupware interface and utilities. I know that the eye-candy portion is just a matter of some php/js/html tweaking, but the better the fit I have out-of-the-box, the easier it is for me.

A colleague recently implemented the commercial version of eGroup for a small airline and I know they are VERY pleased with the Egroupware team and the product.

Many thanks Juri (sorry, couldn't find umlaut on my KB)

I had tried the user@mydomain.net before, but when I followed the guide you linked I realised that I had changed thunderbird's username in the wrong place.

When I got user@mydomain.net set in the proper place, it works fine.

Howdy all

Thanks to Sixstone (and others) i have a fully functional domain, with static IP for my EBox web/mail server, working fine with eGroupware/felamail to send & receive. Problem now is that I cannot get email client (such as thunderbird) to succefully connect. I keep getting login failure using the same user/pass that works fine in eGroupware. Tried enabling ssl connection, and thunderbird prompted me to accept the certificate, so I know client is talking to server.

IMAP enabled, POP enabled, tried with both FQDN and server IP address, but no joy. I do not have the firewall module enabled, so I am not sure if there is a problem there (ie everything blocked until I enabled & configure firewall?)

thanks in advance
Ken

Sorry for the butt-in :-[

Sixstone rode to the rescue again (in my other thread). Please to forgive my tendency to post a comment before understanding the problem.

Howdy and thanks Sixstone ;D

That did the trick.

I didn't know what speed I should set for upload/download, but our ISP told me we have a 5MB/s service, so I put 5000kb/s in the field provided, and now apt-get update works and can resolve the sources.

Sorry for the slow reply; I was in a course all last week

merci,
Ken

Howdy

I decided to try a fresh, clean ebox install in order to correct many config errors I committed as I tinkered before.
I used the verison 1 ISO provided on the ebox website

Now I have some pretty significant problems.

1) Cannot even SEND an email to any account. Nothing out and not even a copy in the SENT folder.

2) As noted in another post, setting static IP for server breaks all name resolution; cannot do apt-gets or any other fetch. Resolve.conf shows valid DNS servers, and I try setting route as well, no joy.

If I restore DHCP, all works again, but then I can't use my registered domain.
ADDED: Once I went DHCP again, I could send email out from server (using egroupware on server)

Ken
