Hello everybody,
We're happy to announce that the official documentation for Zentyal 2.0 is now available at http://doc.zentyal.org/ (http://doc.zentyal.org/)! As usual, it is available in both English and Spanish. We apologize for the delay in publishing due to the simple fact that reviewing and updating the whole documentation has been a lengthy process. We're still working on updating the (almost 500) screenshots in the English version, but this should be done by the end of this week.
If you find any issues (typos, mistakes, etc.) and want to contribute by reporting them, please let us know in this thread so we can fix them.
Thank you! Best regards,
Zentyal Team

In spanish versiĆ³n, in "ConfiguraciĆ³n de un servidor DNS autoritario con Zentyal", the last screenshot for Name servers, is wrong. It is duplicated with previous screenshot mail xchanger.

Hi Acon! Thanks for reporting - we'll fix this ASAP!
Cheers, Heidi

Dear Hvilppola,
where is the pdf version ???
-
when the pdf-version?
-
Hi
Some of the pictures from the english version have spanish labels and texts.
Best regards
Bogdan

Hi arun & ViTality!
Could you please specify why the html-version is not enough or how you would improve it? As we're updating the documentation continuously, we've opted not creating the pdf-version as it would either be most of the time outdated or we should spend plenty of time creating new pdf-versions.
Best,
Heidi

Hi there,
Some of the pictures from the english version have spanish labels and texts.
We are working on this. We hope to have all of them fixed sooner than after.
Best,
-
Could you please specify why the html-version is not enough or how you would improve it?
because the pdf-version can be used in offline mode(without internet)
-
And maybe the pdf version can be included directly in the Zentyal desktop :) so you can start to read/troubleshoot before you have internet connection :)
-
why the html-version is not enough ............
Heidi
Because ....
1. We can use it offline / hardcopy while working on server.
2. Printer friendly.
Even word document may work (if it is difficult to create pdfs each time..), because their we can addon our personal notes also, according to local requirement and save that as an individual server document for future ref. ::)

Since you are using the Sphinx, perhaps you can generate single page html document? please
class sphinx.builders.html.SingleFileHTMLBuilder
This is an HTML builder that combines the whole project in one output file. (Obviously this only works with smaller projects.) The file is named like the master document. No indices will be generated.
Its name is singlehtml. (http://sphinx.pocoo.org/builders.html#sphinx.builders.html.SingleFileHTMLBuilder)

Since this is about documentation and I don't want to make a new thread for this, I just want to mention today I received the English version of the Zentyal for Network Administrators Guide.
Kudos for great work and IMO an essential step for Zentyal to have an indept manual available. I will report back on the usability of the book and hope it will become available in pdf format too.
regards,
Rob

It seems this documentation is (C) 2004-2011 eBox Technologies even though it is clearly based on the previous eBox 1.4 student guide which was licensed under CC-BY-SA.
I'd like to know how I can contribute to this new version of the documentation as the web pages don't seem to be editable (as a wiki would be) and the license seems mistaken. Can someone clarify when the proper license will be applied ?
Thank you!
-
Hi MagicFab,
the license is correct. We have traditionally published the documentation under a creative commons license, hoping to receive contributions and improve it under a community-driven model. Deploying it on a wiki was always on our roadmap, although we expected that to certainly imply some extra effort in maintenance from our side, so we waited for the first contributions before doing so.
However, realising that by version 2.0 we had received no contribution whatsoever, we dropped the creative commons license, as by the moment there seems to be no benefit for the project and the community does not seem to care about it (you are the first one to raise the issue since we published it six months ago). If you have a different opinion please, let me know, I am open to suggestions.
Cheers,
-
I have stated this before and will do again: an INDEPT documentation is essential for a product like zentyal to be a serious alternative for other all-in-one servers like MS SBS server.
The power of open source IS the community and I strongly suggest to make a community driven documentation wiki available.
Because certification is part of the strategy of ebox company, it is even more important to have documentation available for Zentyal. The more certified professionals there are, the more likely Zentyal will get a big influence in the SME's all around the world.
Bottomline: Both ebox company AND the community NEED proper documentation. Also they BOTH need good preperation methods to make Zentyal more succesfull.

Hi Robb,
we have been discussing the idea with the Forum Moderators and we are now preparing a wiki-based community documentation. It will be launched pretty soon.
Regards,
-
Hi Robb,
Community documentation is ready to roll. The wiki consists mainly in two parts: official doc in wiki format (http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation), only editable by Zentyal staff and Forum Moderators, and community contributions (http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community), editable by any forum member. Login is done with the forum account.
Before announcing it, I would like to gather some feedback about the structure we should use and how to link both parts. In order to ease the process, I suggest to set in community contributions the same structure we have in the official documentation, based in Zentyal profiles (infrastructure, gateway, UTM, office, etc). What do you think?
Cheers,

Great move forward! I'll have a thorough look in the coming few days and feed back asap.
Thanks again for this initiative.

Very good news indeed. Looking forward to contributing...

Hello,
having a pointer to the documentation is definitely important. But please - "Official documentation for Zentyal 2.0 now available!" looks a little bit outdated. It states that the current release is 2.0 OR that this Forum is dead. I know both is wrong, so please drop this sticky sequence of outdated posts and replace it with a current one. (Do it this way because a click on the this topic in the overview shows me the "now available!" information from 21.Oct 2010.)
Best regards
