Installation and Upgrades / Re: Horrible Forum
« on: September 11, 2014, 11:45:54 am »
Forums like this are usually intended to provide a platform for the community to help itself. In Microsoft forums your rarely see MS staff responding to anything, instead you see certified professionals of varying calibre offer contradictory advice or attempting to sell their own products and services as a solution. The problem here is, the user base has often been drawn to Zentyal because it offers point and click installation and setup of what, in part, can be a complex thing to do yourself. This means they often do not know what is going on under the hood.
The you have the issue that Zentyal has taken an its own approach to a number of things meaning knowledge and solutions for other distributions no longer apply because its all done in config scripts that then edit the config files. So if you do find what looks to be the solution you need to find those scripts and feel comfortable altering them, and then be prepared to make those changes again when an upgrade wipes them out.
Last of all Zentyal essentially leads the way in the implementation and much of the development of Samba4 and Openchange, implementing these yourself is still a messy tedious process (setting up samba 3 by contrast is very easy and very well documented). That means the only people who know Samba4 & openchange well on here are Zentyal staff and a select number of people who do like getting their fingers dirty under the hood. As these are under continuous development it is also more difficult to let Google be your friend as they have come a long way in the last 18 months or so. If you want help from Zentyal, pay them, if you want help from the rest of us, you either need to wait for us to catch up or get stuck in.

This sounds like a minor bug. Perhaps file a bug report?

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Upgrade zentyal 2.2 to 3.0

Well would you look at that, better than I remember it. IIRC this doesn't cover Zarafa if you were using that on 2.2.
I would also suspect that the issues people encountered upgrading through the minor versions of Zentyal 3 would probably still present themselves.

If he was looking for any updates on a migration procedure, no procedure was ever developed, nothing was ever documented and the one page of initial work on this process that used to be linked from the announcement is indeed no longer there as the OP is pointing out.

Why would you want or need to. It's enforcing convention and standards and you want to break them

I don't think the web server implementation is well documented or widely used, the manual page chooses to tell us about the protocol ffs. As such it is too easy to set it up with poor and possibly dangerous permission levels. If you have set up Zentyal purely as a testbed web server I would suggest you were better off using something like XAMPP or http://www.turnkeylinux.org/lampstack which is setup and ready to roll.

News and Announcements / Re: Zentyal 4.0 Roadmap Published!
« on: July 31, 2014, 05:10:14 pm »
OK, I did have a long ranty post ready arguing many of the same points as others already have and how I came to be using Zentyal (I may yet post it). However it seems to me what has happened is Zentyal has made a clear change of direction from an "All-in-One"/"SBS Server" to an AD/Exchange alternative, that is all well and good but what most of us came to Zentyal for was the full package not one new bleeding edge feature that is not as I understand it entirely stable or by any means feature complete. This seems to mean that we should now deploy a separate server alongside Zentyal to deliver the other requisite features or perhaps deploy Zentyal as a virtual instance.
It could be argued that making Zentyal a virtual appliance as standard is actually a very good idea, if it is running critical tasks such as DNS and authentification. Being able to quickly restore a known working up to date image or redeploy it on new hardware after a failure could be a very useful thing. But Zentyal / its community should document a clear, supported procedure and possibly host requirements for creating and maintaining this setup so we don't end up with 1000 threads and questions and 10 different solutions some of which are out of date or never worked in the first place.
I would also suggest the current model of a constantly moving out of support, constantly breaking  moving target "Community" edition and a commercial stable one should be scrapped, there should be ONE current, stable version. A development release should be seperate. Licensing should be for support only, you could even look at support options charged on a pay as you go or event basis. I personally have no particular issue with Zentyal offering chargeable closed-source modules that add "enterprise" features like email archiving that is a legal requirement in some scenarios but not necessarily as easy to implement as it could be.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: Oplocks on samba
« on: April 17, 2014, 03:10:20 pm »
We use an accounting package developed in foxpro, in its early days the "server" was a shared folder on a dedicated Windows 2000 machine. There were endless issues with oplocks, timeout autodisconnects etc some of which were solved with a simple command line entry the developers neither cared nor bothered to know about.
After switching to Samba all problems vanished, and we only use standard settings. The only time there were issues was the time I did start altering the Samba config to what its own documentation claims is the full and correct manner.

Upgrade button appeared. After applying the update this error is now occurring: https://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,21499.0.html.

Yes community and registered for zentyal remote.
A recent (~1 month) install that has a developeda few quirky issues after some of the recent updates, fingers crossed a full upgrade will make them go away.

Will this end up like my other box, stuck running 2.3 with no nice integrated complete or documented way to upgrade, forgotten and ignored in favour of the latest bleeding edge, buzzword filled and dubiously tested release....

No upgrade button appears for me after core update
