Thanks - I'm going to use the migration instrucitons and migrate to a zentyal vm

2
Hi there

I'm moving my aged but reliable installation of zentyal up from 3.0, to 4.1. It's now on 3.2 and reasonably ok bar a few packaging issues.

I notice that zarafa was dropped in 3.4 and replaced with openchange. Is there a clear migration path in the upgrade from one to the other or am i going to loose mail?

HI

I've gone through the upgrade process from 3.0 to 3.2 with a veiw to progressing through to version 4 however I have the folllowing problem.

I cannot update all the packages. libsmbclient fails because of unresolved dependancies.

I have run the following command in apt-get to see what the issue is;

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get -o Debug::pkgProblemResolver=true -o Debug::Acquire::http=true -f upgrade

It gave me the following info:

Code: [Select]
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Entering ResolveByKeep
  Dependencies are not satisfied for libsmbclient [ amd64 ] < 2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2.12 -> 3:4.3.0+zentyal2 > ( libs )
Keeping package libsmbclient:amd64
The following packages have been kept back:
  libsmbclient
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

I presume it's somehow update a package to the ubuntu core version rather then the patched zentyal version. This would tally with some dns problmes that I'm seeing in samba

What do i do to fix this and get ensure I have the right version of all samba packages

nice thanks

Searched everywhere for these instructions. Not in the documentation where you would expect them. A vague reference in the blurb from zentyal about the release of 3.2 but no link or suggestion of how this apparently easy upgrade is achieved. I'd have expected it to be a permlink in one of the forums at the very least

Can someone provide me with a link to these mythical instructions please

Solved it. It's the vnc password here

/var/lib/zentyal/machines/<virtual machine name>/domain.xml

The valud of passwd In the graphics element of the xml
<graphics type='vnc' listen='0.0.0.0' port='5900' passwd='YOUR PASSWORD' keymap='en-gb'/>

Hi

I want to access my virtual machines running under the zentyal vm module using virt-manager. Virt-manager prompts for a password. This password is stored in a file somewhere and is specific to the vm. I have found it and used it before but stupidly didn't make a note. Can someone point me in the right direction please.

solved this my self about 2 seconds after asking it sorry

Installation and Upgrades / Re: DNS queries refused from vpn

The reason for the tunnel is quite simple. On some corporate sites contractors aren't always allowed internet access via the corporate network. Therefore enabling zentyal as the default gateway ensures that our users always have internet access on remote sites as long as they can get a vpn connection.

The zentyal box sits behind a firewall. It has a single nic and the vpn port is forwarded on through the firewall. NAT is enabled on the vpn. The routing all works great out of the box, trace route shows the expected results, packets from vpn clients are routed over the vpn and out the firewall and on out. The dns is configured correctly the only problem is that the dns doesn't seem to allow queries for machines on the vpn except when they are querying for lan hosts that is hosts in the domain it controls, it will not forward on queries for other domains (or retrieve them from it's cache).

There is no proxy installed on the zentyal box as yet. Traffic is simply routed to and from the internet via the zentyal box / vpn

Hi again Christian

I'm running zentyal 3.0

- how did you configure VPN to push DNS to client?
Under the VPN server configuration there is an option to provide a first and second name server. I put the LAN IP address of the zentyal box in here. I also add the lan domain as the search domain. This gets pushed across to the clients fine. I should point out that this doesn't cause major issues on windows clients because they query the nameserver on the local lan when zentyal refuses them. However android devices don't they just fail when the zentyal dns refuses the query.

- is you DNS configured to enable DNS transparent cache
Yes - but turning it off does not change the problem

- regarding you internet access: this is also because you are using transparent proxy
Nope no transparent proxy at the moment, but eventually yes.

Installation and Upgrades / DNS queries refused from vpn
« on: May 16, 2013, 07:00:26 pm »
Hi

I have a OpenVPN service configured on my zentyal box. Clients connecting to the zentyal box have all there traffic routed through the vpn and there primary dns becomes that on the zentyal box.

DNS queries by vpn clients for machines in the local domain work work fine. ie nslookup somemachine.mydomain.lan resolves ok.

However dns queries for other names are refused ie: nslookup www.google.com results in the following output (on windows)

Server:  myserver.mydomain.lan
Address:  1.2.3.4

*** myserver.mydomain.lan can't find www.google.com: Query refused

This is irritating because it means that you have to disconnect the vpn to use the internet, then reconnect for mail and file transfers etc.

Any ideas?

Zentyal core 3.0.20

The problem was the time sync between the server and the windows client machine.

The solution to this was as follows

Log on to the windows client as a domain administrator.
Execute the following command to sync time with the server (Kerberos authentication is time dependant)

Quote
net time /domain /set /y

Then re-register dns

Quote
ipconfig /registerdns

You may find it helpful to tail the syslog to ensure successful registraton

Quote
sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog | grep <client machine name>

Right this is nowhere near solved

I managed to get 2 machines working as described previously

Since then it hasn't worked for any machine

Bit confused by what your after from zentyal here.

It's really just a server configuration sytem sat on top of ubuntu. The zentyal distribution itself is just for folks that want to run it on a server. Hence it's cut down, why would you want more on a dedicated server. Also that server is aimed at folks with a  windows client base which is predominately what most people have.

Zentyal isn't about the desktop. If your after a desktop linux then your standard ubuntu distro is what you should be looking at. It will integrate with the mail and windows file sharing services offered up by a zentyal server. There are lots of other distros you might want to look at too.

If your after some combination of the two then why not just install your chosen version of ubuntu and install the zentyal packages on top of that. That way you'll get the desktop and the server stuff on one box if that's what your after.
