Installation and Upgrades / Re: How to change the super user
« on: June 30, 2012, 05:46:05 pm »
I never got to the bottom of this and in the end had to re-install.
Took the opportunity to upgrade to Zentyal 2.2-2
Then had issues with my Realtek RTL8168 Lan Card.
And I still haven't figured out how to recover the LVM on my raid1 pair

Realtek RTL8111/8168B GigE Ethernet Card
Zentyal 2.2.2 on Ubuntu 10.04lts

My Symptoms
I have been running Zentyal 2.2.1 on Ubuntu 10.04lts for some time with no network problems
My machine is an HPdx2300 with onboard 100MB Intel Lan chip
and an separate PCIExpress Realtek  RTL8111/8168B GigE Card

I upgraded by way of a clean install to Zentyal 2.2.2 on the same hardware
The Realtek card would just stop working after anything form 2 to 40 minutes
No other obvious symptoms, entries in logs - just no comms

After some researching it seems that there are some issues with these cards Ubuntu
Ubuntu 10.04 makes RTL8111/8168B network card unusable until cold reboot
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/573259

Slow performance ~200Kb/s and others

Further Research suggested a simpler explanation
By default Ubuntu loads the r8169 driver instead of the r8168

AND

Realtek have released a very recent (May2012) updated r8168 driver for linux
r8168-8.031.00.tar.bz2
LINUX driver for kernel 3.x and 2.6.x and 2.4.x  6.017.00  2012/5/24

ESSENTIALLY
Ubuntu by default loads the 8169 driver
Realtek have the latest 8168 driver
You need to replace the 8169 with the 8168

Check if this situation pertains in your environment
sudo lshw -C network

       serial: 00:0a:cd:1a:fc:1a
       size: 1GB/s

OK you have the r8168 card
and
Hmmm Ubuntu has loaded the r8169 driver!

This HowTo covers replacing the Ubuntu included r8169 driver
with the Realtek r8168 driver above.

I found that the Readme included with the driver covered most things
A couple of extra steps were taken from this HowTo
http://unixblogger.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/the-pain-of-an-realtek-rtl8111rtl8168-ethernet-card/

I followed the readme then added bits from the HowTo as required
This was performed on Zentyal 2.2.2 on Ubuntu 10.04LTS

1. Get root privileges
Open the Administrator Console on Zentyal Desktop

2. Get the requirements (This is required to build the module - not mentioned in Readme)
To build and install the driver, we need the kernel headers and the build tools like gcc. To get them, just easily type in a terminal:
apt-get install build-essential

3. Get the driver
Now, go to the official download page from Realtek for the Linux/UNIX Driver for the RTL8111/RTL8168 ethernet card and download the latest driver version. 8.031.00 (as of june 2012)
Link: Realtek Download Page (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#2)

4. Untar the archive
The driver is compressed to an archive. So uncompress it with the following command:
tar xfvj r8168-8.031.00.tar.bz2
NOTE: Please do not forget to replace the “r8168-8.031.00.tar.bz2? with the driver version which you have downloaded!
It untars into a subdirectory r8168-8.031.00 which contains a script autorun.sh which does all the hard work for you

4a. Run the provided install script
cd r8168-8.031.00
./autorun.sh

Should get to "Completed"
You can check what it did in the Log.txt in the r8168-x.yyy.zz folder

That’s it! After a reboot you should have the best possible performance with the RTL8111/RTL8168 and hopefully no other network problems

After the reboot you can check if the right driver is loaded by again running:
sudo lshw -C network

Happiness!   :)

This looks likes a video synch problem as used to be common on CRTs. From your photo your monitor looks like a flat panel.
Most LCD screens have an Auto Configure option (My Samsung has a front panel button) or you may have to go into the menu.
Hitting Auto allows the monitor to adjust itself to the frequencies of the incoming video.
Also Zentyal has a monitor Settings panel - Start > Preferences > Monitor Settings. Check that this is set to the native resolution of you Monitor, you can  usually leave the refresh rate at the default (60hz) for LCD panels

Hmmmm,

Then it looks like I have a problem, none of my admin members can open the webgui, locally or from the lan.
Even my original johng superuser gets same "incorrect password" error.

I tried creating another user thus
sudo adduser omnipotent  followed interactive prompts with details & password
sudo adduser omnipotent admin

Snip /etc/shadow
master:$6$5uUMKP0k$tMfIJwYge8tpPZ4cxNiEc4cPLkCkN2TYFQBoKrRdlCaRPGEnH3W38anjMsYl5Z1C2T0M0U397v9OfR9Bp7PpQ/:15458:0:99999:7:::
omnipotent:$6$KfCAtwhI$fwn9iOCpNjMEC2pzdP4vJNhnVIPeBgdubUhMcG4sSXKwqZPN/nhubYuXq.9USiw6FQYPxhWpqbVHi9Fc7UTsc.:15458:0:99999:7:::
johng:$6$BPTuf2Aq$NOciSRR4IeDFJEBg7TSgDCa2wocFEcaHo5iqwJx9e55v3FbEajZQh12mUUZhT/vBaZMb6caJmXVx25x/5y3Sz1:15302:0:99999:7:::

snip /etc/group
admin:x:117:johng,master,omnipotent

Login as omnipotent :-
Get LXDE desktop, Firefox pops up the Zentyal console login page, login fails "password incorrect"
Same with Master, johng gets the Zentyal Desktop theme but still the error.

any ideas?

Thanks Robb,
I have created my new superuser, & kept the johng user for the moment. When I logged in I got a default lxde destop instead of the Zentyal, and I couldn't log into the Zentyal console with either the new or old user.
I tried copying all the files (hidden as well) from the johng user to my new user, and "chowning" the user& group.
I now get the Zentyal Desktop but still cannot get into the Z Console.

I suspect Zentyal stores it's own user info somewhere?????

Installation and Upgrades / How to change the super user
« on: April 28, 2012, 12:03:15 pm »
I think I may have painted myself into a corner.

I have Zentyal 2.2.7 running as a home gateway & server.
The server and all workstations are in a windows Workgroup
When I installed I used "johng" as the initial and super user.
I then created accounts for my users in the Zentyal Web Console inluding a user "John" for myself.

This seems to have created a problem, since I login to my Win7 Laptop as "johng"
I then get odd permissions errors when accessing group directories, usually permission denied when copying , creating, or renaming files.
I tried creating a user "johng" but get the error "User Exists"
I thought of adding "johng" to the Groups but the superuser does not show up in the list of Zentyal Users for adding to groups.

I have read that in workgroup environments, it is preferable to have each user configured on each system with the same username & password, and then access to resources is seamless.

I would prefer not to have to change my user on my laptop as that same user is used at my office,m and would involve a huge reconfiguration
SO
How can I change the SuperUser in Zentyal to something more suitable like "administrator"?

Thanks

Installation and Upgrades / Re: DHCP & DNS Configuration
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:58:22 am »
Update a year later. This issue has been resolved in Zentyal 2.2.1.  I am now once again deploying Zentyal as a home server, and can confirm that Zentyal now gracefully registers hosts by their names in DNS, as envisaged in my original post.

ejhernandez has a detailed discussion on this at the Zentyal Guest Stars Blog
http://blogs.zentyal.org/gueststars/tag/zentyal/

Great to see that Zentyal team are responsive to their users.

Hi,
I was just getting started on your forum and read the "How to make a good post".

As mentioned Zentyal is slowly shedding it's EBox heritage.

Thus the logs are now in /var/zentyal/zentyal.log on my 2.21 installation

Speaking of logs, Ubuntu usually has a log which records all the messages displayed on the console during boot up, where one can see all the hardware drivers loading, modules initiating etc.
Where can I find that log on Zentyal 2.2.1?

Thanks

Installation and Upgrades / DHCP & DNS Configuration
« on: January 08, 2011, 12:13:52 pm »
After spending 5 days trying to figure out the wierd setup Zentyal implements for DHCP & DNS I finally figured out the following:-

Zentyal 2.0.3 on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, new clean install

DHCP issues addresses in ranges as expected, and will display these in the dashboard
Enabling DYNAMIC DNS publishes these Addresses to DNS with a fixed format of "dhcp-{ip address}.
It DOES NOT obtain the Machine Name from the client, as most would expect. If you REALLY read the docs it does explain this.
{Apparently the DHCP has been explicitly modified to behave thes way ????? as discussed in various posts regarding DHCP & DNS. The only scenario where I could imagine this approach would be useful is in an ISP situation where you are giving out variable IP addresses to clients. If Zentyal is intended for small businesses, then this approach seems pretty useless to me.}

To get the proper Machine Names allocated to addresses you have to configure fixed addresses manually, which pretty much defeats the purpose of having a dhcp.
Worse, these fixed addresses are NOT displayed in the dashboard, so you cannot see which stations are active.

Enabling Dynamic DNS is supposed to publish the fixed addresses and names to DNS, but I could not get this to work.

In the end I had to go with the following setup:-

DHCP - Fixed Addresses
A small Range to cater for guests or other indentified/unidentifiable stations that might want to connect
NO Dynamic DNS
Manually Create DNS Domain
Manually Enter Names & IP Addresses into the Domain.

Only then does DNS lookup work.

However the downside is that with the fixed scheme, the dns responds to queries for stations whether they are up or not. The dashboard displays nothing in DHCP Leases, so the only way to see which stations are active is ping them manually.

I hope other features are going to work more conventionally, as I really like the concept of Zentyal.

Hopefully the DHCP-DNS will be setup to behave in a more conventional way someday.

I heartily agree with bscarra in his related post http://forum.zentyal.org/index.php?topic=3541.0
