News and Announcements / Re: Usage of eBox Platform
« on: August 26, 2009, 10:11:39 am »
We are using it in 2 offices as a PDC, replacing Windows2003 servers. It works well with windows clients but I have headaches with Linux clients.

We have a number of Kubuntu 8.04 clients and am looking for a way to use the Ebox mainly as backup/mirror of users HOME directories. Due to Samba weaknesses (I have been told, can not confirm) neither rsync or rdiff-backup works as I would expect. I get problems when users have several "levels" of subdirectories.

I understand that NFS likely would work better than Samba for network file directories for linux users so I suggest you look into that and when one sets up a client/user one separates windows clients from linux clients.

Further - I am still waiting for an easy backup of all users/groups shares from server to backupmedia

Thanks for taking time with this. For now I have too many other problems (looooong story) and am only using the fileserver/pdc part. Will wait for the Hardy packages.

Please please though - make an upgrade possible as otherwise the users here will kill me...

I might add that a test Ubuntu hardy version is under way, see this thread at ubuntuforums.org:

Hello,
it seems to me that you haven't allowed the host/network to send email. (None is allowed by default).

To give permission, to your host/network you need firstly to create a object which contains the host network.
Then, you must go to Mail->General and click in the 'settings' tab. There you will find a section called 'Relay policy for objects', move your object to the allowed column and save the changes.

Cheers,
  Javier
I did try this, after some "net-running" I found hints on this (no hard criticism but if Ebox is aimed at newbies then the manual could do with a bit more detail on stuff like this....) but it did not help one bit. Same error message.

DHCP does not seem to work either and I can not for the life figure out the DNS config.

I have configured one interface with ip, gateway and nameservers during install, these are available in the DHCP setup but nothing seems to be "handed out". The process is running...

At this moment basically only the Fileserver and ssh are working. SSH I installed from ubuntu during installation.

Have just installed (am installing) the ubuntu test version. So far so good after I installed openssh in Ubuntu install rather than Ebox.

Now my problem; I can not get the mailserver to send "Relay access denied". The user manual is not very informative on this.

Hope someone can assist me to get the mail working  ???

I can answer myself here: the openssh never seems to get installed. Install that (and no other) from ubuntu-server install and you are up and go...

I have the same problem, ssh is simply not working. Can not edit it and any changes I do in firewall rules seem not to have any effect. Any way of manually starting the service from the server?

I have to use Gutsy version as the server I use have SATA disk and the Debian based Ebox simply do not install.

Praise to you guys btw, this is an excellent concept.

Installation and Upgrades / Re: schedule backup

Thanks for the pointer! This will not mess up Ebox "built-in" backup?

My real wish (before Xmas) is that Ebox would have "scheduling" and "mail report to" on the backup.

Installation and Upgrades / schedule backup
« on: February 26, 2008, 02:40:30 pm »
am just about to do my first "live" install of Ebox after some testing. One thing I miss is a simple way to schedule backups, can this be done? If I could be pointed in the direction of the correct cron-command perhaps...
