Title: Zentyal 2.0-rc1 released!
Post by: J. A. Calvo on August 23, 2010, 05:30:56 pm
Hi future Zentyal users,

The development team of Zentyal, the Linux small business server, is glad to announce the availability of the first release with our brand new name. As you may already know, eBox Platform has now become Zentyal. And this is the first release candidate before the final 2.0 version.

Naturally the main visible change since the last eBox 1.5-1 installer is the rebranding associated with the new name, but there are also two other important changes. Firstly, we have switched from blackbox to lxde to provide a more friendly desktop environment for non-expert users. Secondly, as already announced (http://forum.ebox-platform.com/index.php?topic=4588.0), eGroupware is no longer maintained so we haven't included it in this installer. If you wish, you can still install it from the official repositories, but you should take into account that it will be replaced soon. As to other changes and improvements, this version of course also ships all the bugfixing that has been done since the last release.

As we are approaching the release date (September 1st), your help in testing this release candidate and giving feedback is more important than ever. So, it's testing time! Let the games begin - we're waiting for your feedback at the Forum :)!

You can download the new installer, as usual, from our Downloads (http://trac.ebox-platform.com/wiki/Download) page.

Hi J. A. Calvo,

How can I import the configuration from 1.4 version to the new 2.0 version? If I make a complete backup (without eGroupware) in the 1.4 version and a restore in the 2.0 version I will have problems?

Thanks and Congratulations for the new RC version,
Jorge Quintao

Hi J.A. Calvo,

Another question... Will be released a 64 bits version from Zentyal 2.0? It can be cool for who want use ZZ (Zentyal + Zimbra)... See this news about the Zimbra future: http://www.zimbra.com/downloads/32bit_phaseout.html

Thanks,
Jorge Quintao

Hi Jorge,

Regarding the 64bits, yes, we plan to release a 64bit version, but it will be after the official release of the 32bit version.

The upgrades from 1.4 hasn't been tested too much so there is no guarantee of success, but you can try by making and restoring the backup.

Best regards,

Will it be possible to upgrade from core 1.5.12 to this version? Or do all the betatesters need to re-install their whole server?

Yes, of course it will be possible. The problem is that launchpad seems to be overloaded and the packages (that were submitted many hours ago) haven't started to build yet :(

Great. That explains why both apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade failed to find anything at all!  ;D

The packages are finally ready! Let us know if there is any issue with them.

Please do not add any support questions to this thread. They belong in the betasection of the forum.

I'm not a programmer so I can't help with the integration but I would LOVE to see Zimbra integrated as Zentyal's new groupware solution.  If you could even integrate Funambol nice and seamlessly too, then you've got a real Microsoft Small Business Server Killer.

I also think that you should keep up the work on the Zentyal desktop client that automatically configures a workstation for LDAP authentication against Zentyal.

Don't worry, we will work on that for sure after the 2.0 release.

What is the status of upgrade from 1.4-2 to 2.0? Also how long after this is released will 64bit arrive?

Tks in advance
Eric

There is no date set for the 64bit iso but we hope to have it ready soon. Anyway, take into account that you can install a regular 64bit Ubuntu Server and the Zentyal packages on it.

Regarding the upgrade from 1.4 to 2.0 we can not guarantee you if it will be smooth, but we can assist you during the migration if you buy our professional support (http://store.ebox-technologies.com/support.html).

Just thought this may be an opportune time to refresh my longstanding request for the ebox-desktop module to not be specifically tied to an Ubuntu distro. From my perspective it will be ideal if it can be made to work out-of-the-box on the widest range of Linux clients.

Perhaps it might be possible to also include a section in the forthcoming docs/manual that covers in detail:
In turn this might then be extended by users contributing actual working examples of clients which work in a variety of of operating systems to augment the range  provided by default.
