The documentation for getting started with zentyal development is fragmented and refers to older versions of zentyal (pre-4.0).
I've got a ubuntu 14.04 VM running with eclipse/EPIC for editing/debugging.
I've git clone zentyal main to my workspace.

what else do I need? any other dependencies? any CPAN modules needed or is everything included in the git src tree?

The current zentyal 4 version has focused on the SMB office server but the core services could be expanded to provide a complete home server version which addresses the privacy issues associated with uploading your digital life to the likes of google/microsoft/nsa.
A complete privacy tuned home server could provide:

• private email using zentyal4.0 samba/openchange
• private cloud using pydio with user authentication against samba ad
• private webserver/social network using joomla with user authentication against samba ad
• private storage service for devices on internal network
• media server for devices on internal network
• squid/tor/privoxy browsing module for 'anonymous' browsing
