We are not joining home editions to the domain, it cannot be done, just connecting them to the network, I have hundreds of customers with Windows home premium machines on Microsoft domain networks on SBS 2003, SBS 2008, SBS and Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2013, they just operate in workgroup mode, they can still access shares on the SBS domain servers, they can still connect to Exchange, this just do not have the same security features as a domain joined machine.

Do not treat me as an idiot when it comes to Windows machines on Windows networks what I do not know about Windows Networks you could write on one hand.

Linux on the other hand is a different matter, I last sold a Linux server round about 2001 based on Suse, it was configured by me as a ISDN router converted later to ADSL router ( via a modem ), firewall, File Server, Mail Server, proxy server and it is still in use but only as a NAS backup drive.

Now univention works, all network connected machines ( Domain or non Domain ) can see the Doman Server and its file shares, just like they can on all versions of Windows Server from version NT 3.5 onwards, Univention  and Zentyal are both running Samba 4 so both should work, it is down to a miss-configuration in the Zentyal version of Samba that is stopping non domain machines from seeing the network.

NT 3 was not a success ( still have beta disks and manuals )

I think I know part of what is wrong and why home premium machines cannot see network, I do not know how to fix it.

the file smb.conf  has a line :-

server services   = -dns

it should also have +s3fs

Try as I may, I cannot get home premium machines or even pro machines not connected as domain members to see the Server, domain joined machines are fine.

Univention server works fine with the same 2 machines, 1 x Home Premium and 1 x Pro machine not joined to domain, so the problem is down to Zentyal configuration.

It did not do it, I had to install both, will give it another go when I log another machine on, I might have done it wrong first time around.

Come to think of it you have to download the certificate package from the Public downloads folder in SBS 2011 and run the install program to install the certificate but it is still only one certificate not 2 certificates as is the case with Zentyal

I have setup the mail and configured Outlook 2010 to connect to the mail server which it does, however autodiscover keeps popping up with certificate authority not trusted.

I have tried to install the certificate both in the physical stores and the normal stores, it appears to install but it is not there after.

Now I got around the problem by downloading the certificate for the Authority and installing that certificate both in trusted root certificate Authorities and trusted publishers, the popup certificate will install in the physical store

Why will it not install before doing this.

Installation and Upgrades / Windows 7 Home Premium not seeing network
« on: January 24, 2015, 02:54:30 pm »
I have an SBS 2011 network and it is fine with Windows 7 home premium machines that are not joined to the domain, they can still see the server and map drives without entering passwords as long as the local login name and password matches that of the domain login details, I have a number of customers who need to replace their SBS 2003 server so I am experimenting with zentyal, I have installed it and it works fine, I can log Windows 7 pro machines on to the domain and they work just great, I can see the shares and map drive letters, I have set it up to emulate my above SBS 2011 network

However a Windows 7 home premium or a pro machine not joined to the domain can not see the network at all, but they see the SBS network server when connected to that network, the 2 networks are separate, to use the machines on the test network the cables for the non domain machines are swapped over to the test networks router, the test machine domain joined is a new pro installation.

Many customer have laptops and home premium machines that need to connect to the network, what have I not done that will let these machines see the zentyal network just as they see the SBS2011 network
