Title: Zentyal 4.2 available!
Post by: J. A. Calvo on October 22, 2015, 12:54:53 pm
Hi all,

The Zentyal Development Team proudly presents Zentyal Server 4.2, a new release with native Microsoft® Exchange protocol implementation and Active Directory interoperability.

This release is based on the newest Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS to provide the latest updates. It also integrates Samba 4.3.1, with lots of improvements for Active Directory services and support for Windows 8.1 and the newest Windows 10.

Zentyal Server comes in two different flavors: development version, for bleeding edge testing of the latest available features and commercial version for stable production environments.

The Development edition of this new version is available for download at:

http://www.zentyal.org/download

You can check out all the details in the official announcement:

http://wiki.zentyal.org/wiki/Zentyal_4.2_Announcement

Looking forward for your feedback and don't forget more updates will be coming among next weeks!

Hi,

Thanks for the news, as we're all looking forward to improvements. May I say that right now I'm installing it, to see were it goes. But there is one little thing:

I created this psot https://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,25556.msg96628.html#msg96628 (https://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,25556.msg96628.html#msg96628) and I would like to know if this problem gets fixed in this release.

Sorry to ask, as this feature is very important from all of us and I get stuck on this setup c'ause couldn't get it setup correctly on the Zentyal 4.1.

As a Zentyal enthusiast here in Brasil, I must say that the version 3.4.8 was undoubtedly the best version ever [well, at least for me, I've got everything working fine, not a single fault].

Thanks for the news, let's see what happens :)

Cheers from Brasil :D

This seems not to be a Zentyal problem, authentication against a Zentyal AD work. You've got post in the thread! ;)

@J. A. Calvo:
Keep up the work! ;D

Is Zentyal now using all Ubuntu gcc-packages as base or provide it's own again like in 4.1? This is a crucial problem when trying to extend Zentyal with software like WebVirtMgr! ::)

That's for backup configuration not backup files.

Hi RAAC,

You are right, there is no more options to configure how local backup to be made but there is still option to backup your system.
Beginning with Z 4.0, they drastically reduced the functionality of the Zentyal.  :(

There are many other distros that have extended options for backup configuration (NethServer - AiO Server; Endian - UTM; ...). You can try if you want to be "up to date" (Z 2.0 is stable but to old and you are not satisfied with Z 4.2).  ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  :)

Is Z 4.0 can support windows 10 active directory and domain directory? Because Z 2.0 can only support windows XP that's why i want to upgrade my server.

And can you give the download link of Z 4.0?

I really don't know. I use Z 4.2 as Multidomain Email Server in DMZ (with Endian as UTM).

But according to this: https://wiki.zentyal.org/wiki/Zentyal_4.2_Announcement, it works.

I am talking to Z 4.0 . I need backup/restore files that Z 4.2 don't have and Z 4.0 have. Do you have any download link of Z 4.0?

I know, but I don't think win 10, win 8 will work.

Looks dead to me, their github has no activity since a while. No news in their blog since nearly a year....

This mail is directly from J. A. Calvo. Zentyal is alive  ::) more than ever.

Thank you for your message and for your interest in Zentyal. With regards to your question, a new Zentyal Server version is currently under development. According to our usual release cycle, we release a new major Zentyal Server for each new Ubuntu Server LTS approximately 6 months after the Ubuntu Server release. The Zentyal Server 5.0 (based on Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS) will be released in October-November.

Best regards

@J. A. Calvo
Thanks for the News.

I'm developing a project and look for a AD/LDAP-based user-management with Mail and Exchange functionality (and others, which Zentyal delivers out of the box)  as core for other (dockeriezed) services, which will authenticate against it.
at the time of being, it hast not to be "very" stable, since the project is in a the phase of "proof of concept"

the used AD/LDAP-server should be able to run in an LXC/LXD container.

Is there a possibility to get an dev. snapshot/beta of 5.0?

TIA

Its official :D

Zentyal Development Team is glad to announce the development roadmap for Zentyal Server 5.0! This will be a new major Zentyal Server version, that will be based on Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) and it will be released in November 2016. The expected release date is November 29th.

The Zentyal 5.0 version focuses primarly on improved Samba4 integration, with the goal of offering an easy-to-use Linux server that is natively compatible with the Microsoft® Active Directory. Due to the fast Samba4 development, from this version onwards Zentyal will integrate the latest stable Samba4 packages available upstream for Ubuntu/Debian. This allows quicker introduction of new Samba4 features, fixes and updates to Zentyal.

In addition, Zentyal 5.0 will include HTTP Proxy module and important improvements in Zentyal core to make it compatible with the changes in Ubuntu 16.04 (i.e. Systemd instead of Upstart for daemon management) and the possibility to install packages in Debian systems in the future. Due to the issues found recently in the OpenChange (that offers native synchronization with MS Outlook clients via MAPI protocol), this functionality has been dropped until the issues have been fixed and the module has been stabilized. For the time being, Zentyal can be deployed as a IMAP-POP3 mail server.

Finally, it seems we may backport 4.4.7 packages from Debian, which at first glance they seem to work well. Note that Ubuntu packages are still 4.3.11.

Sadly, we also tried with the 4.5.1 packages from Debian experimental repo but they don't seem to work at all. Note also that this doesn't mean we can't provide an upgrade to to Samba 4.5 in the near future if those packages are fixed or adapted for Ubuntu.

Their sales is active so that we will purchase the commercial edition.

Finally we will include 4.5 packages from Debian. That means the packages will be copied to our repo as they are, with no custom patches from Zentyal as we needed in the past, everything should work with the regular Samba code from upstream.
