Installation and Upgrades / SOFTWARE RAID: lot of troubles !!!
« on: October 06, 2011, 08:29:39 am »
After some heavy testing I found out that Zentyal (or lets's say UBUNTU) has serious troubles with SOFTWARE RAID...

Normally I use 4 (!) equal harddisks which are in RAID1 (mirror) as my DATA-DISK set.
If I shutdown the server and disconnect 1 disk, the server must be detect the problem and automatically start again with one harddisk less.
As soon there is a new hardddisk added, the administrator must have the option to add this new disk to the RAID.

(With ClearOS (Centos based) I used WEBMIN to add the new drive to the raid, also possible in Zentyal (after installing MDADM))

But as soon you disconnect a drive from the raid1, the system doesn't start normally.  You must do a lot of unneeded things to get the system alive again !

I really like Zentyal, but dataprotection is the most importent thing of a server.

So, I hope this is something what can be fixed very easy (I remove one harddisk for a new one every month to have a complete backup of all the data on a harddisk not connected to the server), but after searching the internet this seems to be a non-solved issue from UBUNTU Linux...

Clearos and Centos has no problem with this at all.

A hardware-raid is faster, but if the raid-controller fails, you have serious problems to get the data back... So, not the right sollution..

I am trying to install Zentyal 2.2 (64bits) on a system with 1 IDE-harddisk and a working network.
Install (Delete all disks), automatic mode:  after some time it fails: can't install the software...
Sometimes it gets further but the system stops when it's installing Firefox (at 84%)....

I have tried also a mirror, same option.  Different kernel, same problem...

1 time it worked (not sure why), and I had a working system: after this: fresh new installation to see what's happening.
Now I can't get it installed succesfully !   (I am sure the network (DHCP) is 100% ok.

CD checked too by the installation-software: 100% ok, no failures.

Expert mode tried also: LVM and some other things, no luck.

I hope somebody can tell me what to do ?

I want to switch to Zentyal (from ClearOS), because it's better: but the installation is difficult in this way...

HELP PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The following modules are not working: Not working: system, network, users, http proxy, firewall, etc.

I have installed Ubuntu Lucid 64bits and the latest Ebox software.

It looks better then in the past, but now importent modules can't be accessed in the dashboard.

SAME THING IN OUR OFFICIAL 1.5 EBOX system ????

Some of the updates made a mess with it !!??

HELP EBOX ??!!!!!

I have installed my server from scratch again: Ubuntu server Lucid 10.04 64bits (without packages except the virtual machine package). After that: I update/upgrade and install the 1.5 modules as described here on the forum. So far so good.
Ebox runs ok, after enabling all the modules in Ebox and do some setup there I restarted the server.
It boots but stopped because it can't find the ldap server...

Something else: the ebox-dashboard is (when the server works in before the reboot)  much slower then when I had installed the Ebox-server 1.4.2 software (just the official Ebox CD image).

Problem now: server doesn't work now. Will install it again using the 1.4.2 cdrom.
(had to do some work, server files (fileshares on my mirror-disks) are needed...

Maybe this is something what needs to be investicated by the Ebox company ??

This is a howto to install VMware server on your Ebox, BUT: the software is running but for some reason I can't get into the VMware server via another computer, only direct on the Ebox-server. Maybe someone else can solve it ?  Anyway, this is how you can install VMware server on your Ebox-server:

1) Download the actual vmserver for Linux 32bits (*.gz bestand).
VMWare server download : http://www.vmware.com/download/server/
VMWare serial number registration : http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html

Start installation (in SSH shell)

cd /usr/local
mkdir vmware
cd vmware
(you must copy the file below file to this folder first - use webmin for it)
tar xzvf Vmware-server-2.0.2-203138.i386.tar.gz
apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` xinetd
cd vmware-server-distrib
apt-get install gcc
./vmware-install.pl    (de-installation: vmware-uninstall.pl)
=> use the defaults for the vmware-installation, administrative user='root'.

Adapt the firewall: TCP 902 (remote connections), TCP 8222 (standard http connections), TCP 8333 (secure https connections).

Enter a password for the root user (Vmware uses standard the user root, ubuntu-Ebox doesn't have a root-password normally):

sudo passwd root

After this all, you can access the VMware-server via Firefox:  https://localhost:8333 or via http://localhost:8222     -  you must login, username=root and password=yourpassword

Ignore the certificate-warning, just accept it, it's your own server  ;D

If somebody can fix the remote-access problem, please explain it here !

Installation and Upgrades / HOWTO: WEBMIN installation
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:19:06 pm »
Ebox is great, but not everything can be done with Ebox yet, for example: if you want to attach 2 mirror-harddisks which contains already data, you can solve that very easy with Webmin.
Also there is still no FTP module, no LAMP support, etc.. if you install Webmin on your Ebox-server too, you can do a lot more until Ebox supports all the things you need.

So, this is a small HOWTO to install Webmin at your EBOX-server:

Login (as root) at your Ebox-server with a SSH-program like PUTTY (http://www.putty.org/) .
Check the newest version of Webmin here: www.webmin.com

Enter these commands in the shell:

cd /usr/local
mkdir webmin
cd webmin
wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin-1.510.tar.gz
tar xzvf webmin-1.510.tar.gz
cd webmin-1.510
sh setup.sh

You will be asked to answer some questions: root-user = 'admin'  and root-password = your admin password. For the rest of the questions: use the defaults.

Don't forget to open the TCP poort 10000 in your firewall. (internal or external connections, whatever you need to use).

Access to webmin:  https://ip-adres-of-your-eboxserver:10000

Maybe this HOWTO can be put in the HOWTO-section of this website ?

Warning: read also Thomas message here below: use Webmin with very great care !!

Installation and Upgrades / Ebox users on a chatbox ?
« on: May 24, 2010, 09:01:09 pm »
Is there a chatbox for Ebox-users ?

Maybe handy for users who want to share their knowledge ?

It's possible with SKYPE for example...

Just have enabled the events from my Ebox server, nice system !

But now I get more then 25 emails a days with this:

Subject: [EBox-event] An event has happened at Ebox-server

We have a few computers and a XBOX 360 gameconsole connected to a switch. This switch is connected to the internal networkcard from our Ebox-server (running as a GATEWAY). The external networkcard from this server is connected to our internetmodem.

We have access to the internet with every computer here, no problem.
BUT: the XBOX gameconsole has problems, it has a internet-connection, but if we try to connect to XBOX-LIVE we get this error: "NAT is MODERATED, it must be open for a better XBOX-LIVE experience".  After some googling, we have added some ports to the firewall, but it doesn't work:

UDP/TCP poort 3074
UDP/TCP poort 53
UDP poort 88

Who knows how we can fix this ?  NAT configuration must be open for the XBOX console ???

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED !

I have a very strange problem.

I have installed EBOX (latest version) on a computer, standalone server in a network.
I have added a single group and added a user to it.
In the Windows-network I see the server and the homemap of this user.
After I connect to this map (with username and the password) I can enter the map.
I can create a file (e.g. test.txt) but if I put some text inside and save the file, I get the message that there is NO ROOM TO STORE THE FILE ???    There is ROOM ENOUGH !!!
I can see the file I have created, zero size...

I have installed 3 other Ebox-servers already (all in the same way), but now with the latest version of Ebox and this time on an slower computer (Atom dualcore cpu).  that's all.
Everything is ok, but I can't use the fileserver of it...

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT !!!!

Installation and Upgrades / apt-get update problem
« on: February 19, 2010, 04:30:25 pm »
After the last update of my Ebox using the Ebox dashboard, I can't install other software using SSH (putty)  anymore.

When I enter this:
apt-get update I get some text and it fails.
Some of the text:

Couldn't retrieve some archives, maybe you should use 'apt-get update' or --fix-missing ?

apt-get clean or apt-get autoclean does't help ?

Does anybody have a sollution for this ?

(I use the newest Ebox version)

;D

As all new users of EBOX, I have a lot of questions but first of all I want to say something:

I have used ClarkConnect (ClearOS now) for years, nice software but the support is not very good, and the dashboard-system is extremly slow, flexshare system doesn't work also.

Last week I was looking for something different and I found EBOX !!!

It's a bit different then ClearOS but it's much better !!!
Quick dashboard, great VPN system (very userfriendly !!).

Ok, I miss something like MAILDROP (ClearOS mailsystem), but there are many other great tools inside EBOX !!!

SO, I am totally switched over to EBOX, my ClearOS server is changed in an EBOX-server now !

BIG COMPLIMENTS TO THE EBOX-COMPANY !!!!!!!!

With kind regards from the Netherlands !!!!!!
