Using USB Port Internet Device
« on: September 13, 2011, 05:24:20 pm »
Hi All,

I am trying to use an internet modem on my zentyal server, this modem on windows usually has to be installed and authentication provided, and of course connected via the USB port, Is it possible to use such on Zentyal, I am trying to buy a USB to Ethernet converter, but i believe that will not solve all the problems. Can anyone assist with this?

Thanks in anticipation.

Why not buy a simple ethernet modem? For less than $50 / €45 you have a modem/router that will do the trick.

I think what Rotimi is tryng to say is that he wants to use a Vodafone or Orange or Verizon type modem. (a gprs 3g USB modem)
And on windows those things have the driver and the connection program on a flash memory. So when you insert the usb modem the installer / connection manager  starts

Unfortunately i do not think that this is the case on Zentyal. You should read the manual for your usb modem and see if it is supported on linux.

Bogdan

I am trying to get a mifi2200 with verizon going on a Zentyal box. According to this post:
http://people.adams.edu/~cdmiller/posts/Ubuntu-Lucid-mifi2200-verizon/

the mifi should work on Lucid 10.04, so any specific problem should be caused by differences in the Zentyal and standard installs.

On a new Zentyal install with Networking, Logs, and Monitoring modules added. USB devices to not seem to be detected. Seems thats where I'm going to start.

Ok actually I can see with dmesg that it detects the usb being inserted

As further reference here is steps for installing the mifi 2200 in gnome.. perhaps I'll try installing that as these steps seem more straight forward:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1706479
as yet another reference, this guy asked about using a 3g modem with zentyal via pppconfig (answers at very bottom):
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Linux_Networking/Q_26714713.html
This is another gent who has the mifi running plugged in to a ubuntu box:

I'll spend some time fooling and see what I can figure out.
