Joining a Windows 7 client to Zentyal-Only Domain Controler
« on: October 06, 2011, 10:59:22 pm »
I'm not able to join my Windows 7 client to the Zentyal domain I have created.  I have my DNS set to use the zentyal server, I can ping the server and the domain name used from the client, and I even get the credentials screen when I enter the domain name in the "change" window on the client, but when I click "OK" after entering my username and password (yes I have checked the administrator rights boxes on the user account), I get the following message:  "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

I found an article about changes some registry settings, which I did and rebooted, but the error message is the same.

I've been managing Windows domains for many years so I have some idea how it should work, and the instructions make it sound very easy with Zentyal as well, but even after several re-installs I'm still unable to join.

Both client and server are on the same private subnet and are plugged into the same "dumb" hub, and I am able to access the default share for the user on the server and create/delete files and folders on it.

Thanks for any help,

David

STATUS= Resolved.  Even though I followed the instructions to manually add the registry DWORD values, what actually worked was running the registry patch 1.4 available here:  http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community/HowTo/Windows7Support

Although other topics report this should not be needed anymore also because of Samba4, I can confirm also you need to apply the register patch on Windows-7 clients.

Also having a dns domain configured same as the PDC domain and having the netbios name equal to the hostname of the box all seemed to help.

Did you apply the domaincompatibilitymode register adjustments?

Zentyal 2.x does not have Samba4 available. We all hope Samba4 is ready before Zentyal3.0 is ready to be released. That would make things a lot easier.

Like i stated; i had the exact same issue as hartjed in the topic start, and indeed the registry patch helped to resolve it. Your links are usefull but basically are the same as hartjed indicated in his link. (Then I might have read the assumption to have Samba4 in the 2.2 somewhere, OK its S3 then)

Btw; if you use captive portal also you can forget using the PDC / Samba functionality out of the box, as there are some firewall rule conflicts in there now.

I understand that your link has worked in the past, but I am having the same problems as you had right now. If you could post the useful code you found at that page here, I would be very appreciated.
