- as a gateway : P4 or equivalent, 2Go RAM, 80 Go HD (P4 means at least 400Mhz FSB)

- basic install : 100 MHz Pentium, 128 Mo RAM, 1 Go HD

This said, you can NOT compare router and proxy.

I do not. I "add" gateway role to proxy role (which is more ressource consuming)

Zentyal will swap constantly with less than 1.5 GB RAM, even doing "nothing"... At best, a P3 is UDMA 133... With 256 Mo RAM, pfSense will run entirely in RAM, even a 100 Mo Squid cache!

What's not to be compared with ?

Perfect demo  although figures could still be discussed (but I will not).
Then go for pfSense if it fits your need. This is OK for me.
I mean Zentyal is not the only one solution and some solutions have clear advantages over Zentyal (and some drawbacks). I used to run Zeroshell and was quite happy with this (another one very light solution).

However here in Zentyal related forum, we discuss mainly Zentyal stuff

I think that trying to "sell" Zentyal in any case is not a good thing for... Zentyal, at first... and especially not in THIS case... It's like bying a 5 seat car when you are alone... It can work but is it rational ? Is it a good advice ?

Hardware requirements are approximated recommendations, RAM is cheap

So I decided to make a separate box specifically for content filtering... I installed traffic shaping and got it working perfectly, and then I configured my proxy settings, but as soon as I enable transparent proxy, traffic shaping ceases to function at all. So now I can block sites using the proxy, but I cannot use traffic shaping to restrict bandwidth on things like video streaming or P2P software...

Any ideas what I've done wrong? Or does Traffic shaping simply not work combined with transparent proxy?
