Zentyal Gateway (IP Problem.)
« on: May 11, 2011, 01:16:50 pm »
Hi all..  :D

I 1st thank for this wonderful product. i'm using Zentyal for the past 3months.

My problem is my NIC's having the following IPs.

eth0 (192.168.1.1) and eth1 (192.168.2.1)

:-\this turns my default gateway of my local network from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1

???My question is what i do to keep my default gateway as 192.168.1.1

should i configure the router or i have, options in my Zentyal itself (if yes, how?)..?

Kindly take this as an urgent issue ..

Thanks....

So instead of using bridged mode in either your modem/router or Zentyal you are 'double natting'.

If you put your modem/router in bridge mode, your Zentyal eth0 will get an external IP address and eth1 can get your original internal gateway IP address. Alternatively you can put Zentyal in bridgemode.

Hi robb..
thanks a lot for your reply.
can u just add one more thing..?
i cannot modify my office's modem or router since i want the default setup as of now,
so tell how to put Zentyal in bridgemode..?(step by step process will be a better one)

Is that
Method: Bridged in Network -> Interface -> eth0
or i want to modify something else..?

Thanks in advance..  ;)

Chiyan,

I can recommend you to purchase the Zentyal for Network Administrators book, published by Zentyal.

Configuring Zentyal in bridged mode:
Assumed eth0 is connected to the modem/router and eth1 is connected to your internal lan

Go to Network -> interfaces
You select for eth0: bridged. A virtual bridged interface will be created.

There you associate the bridge to the internal ip address of the zentyal server.
This way you create a transparent connection between external and internal interface.

Finally configure gateway with the internal ipaddress of the Zentyal server

Robb's suggestion is correct, but I do have one remark however.
If you set up the transparent bridge it will loose it's properties like IP etc.
This means that the default gateway for clients should be the modem/router, because the bridge is transparent.

Transparent bridging is just that, it becomes invisible for clients on the lan.
If I'm wrong please comment on it, never to old to learn some basic networking stuff.

Cheers.

You are correct.
The gateway will be the internal IP of the router.
