Zentyal 2.0 packages available in Ubuntu Natty repositories!
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:50:58 pm »
Hi fellow Zentyal users and Ubuntu Community,

Zentyal development team is happy to announce the availability of some
of our modules in the official Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty" repositories.

The included module versions on this release are:

libebox 2.0.8-0ubuntu1
ebox 2.0.16-0ubuntu1
ebox-services 2.0.1-0ubuntu1
ebox-objects 2.0.1-0ubuntu1
ebox-ntp 2.0.2-0ubuntu1
ebox-ca 2.0.4-0ubuntu1
ebox-network 2.0.9-0ubuntu1
ebox-firewall 2.0.2-0ubuntu1
ebox-dns 2.0.2-0ubuntu1
ebox-dhcp 2.0.3-0ubuntu1
ebox-squid 2.0.4-0ubuntu1
ebox-openvpn 2.0.8-0ubuntu1
ebox-samba 2.0.8-0ubuntu1
ebox-printers 2.0.3-0ubuntu1
ebox-usersandgroups 2.0.11-0ubuntu1

To install Zentyal on Natty just run:

sudo apt-get install ebox ebox-network (... all the desired modules)

With these packaging efforts we want to confirm our commitment to the
Ubuntu community, give non LTS releases users the chance to still use
Zentyal on their servers and keep the software updated during the
way from Lucid LTS to the next LTS release.

We would like to remind you that the Zentyal official releases are always
based on the latest Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support, 5 years) release,
currently Ubuntu Lucid and these releases include the full set of available
modules.

Thanks to the Zentyal community and the Ubuntu community for providing
such friendly and warm environment where to develop this project, we
are waiting for your feedback and we are open to all kinds of contributions!

Guess my only question is:

Do they work?

Jaunty had packages in the "official" repo's as well, and the majority were nearly unusable...
Zentyal 2.1.xx installed from CD, running on
P4 CPU 3.40GHz / 3GB DDR2/800 / 1x64GB SSD

My Zentyal Feature Wish-List:

IPv6 * LinuxMCE Integration * Blocklist Mgmt
x2go Module * Groups that actually MEAN SOMETHING
Roaming Profiles between Master and Slave Servers

Jaunty was too long ago, give Natty a try and if you find something broken report it :P

Is Zentyal Desktop also became the part of Ubuntu official repo ?
We are eagerly waiting the Zentyal Desktop's stability and accepted by community as well as Ubuntu repo, so that we can confidently setup Zentyal SBS (as domain) in a heterogeneous (Ubuntu & Windows) network.

No, take into account that Zentyal Desktop is not yet a finished product, but we will be pleased to include it the official Ubuntu repositories once it is.

What I would find more important is: what will happen if you upgrade from lucid to natty. Will a Zentyal config stay working? Or are problems expected?

Will it be possible to stay up to date with the OS without having to start from scratch with Zentyal?

Maybe not an immediate need, but in 1 year time I think a lot admins want to move on to the next LTS.

As you can see at http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/ReleasePolicy, once there is a new LTS, the next Zentyal stable version will be based on it. And we will try to make the upgrade from the previous stable version of Zentyal as easier as possible.

As natty is not LTS we can't guarantee that a upgrade from lucid will work without problems.

Just to let you guys know, i have been testing Zentyal 2.0 on Natty, and i am experiencing severe problems with usersandgroups, my slapd database goes corrupt literally every restart or configuration change of Users and Groups.

I already posted a thread about this in the general support section:
http://forum.zentyal.org/index.php/topic,6899.0.html
The answer is 42 or reboot.

Hi, Are you going to release the mail module as well? If so, when? ;)

Thank you

Hi thk,

We can't add new packages to an already published version of Ubuntu like 11.04 is. If you want the mail module you should install the official packages for the current LTS (10.04).
