change mail store location
« on: September 30, 2009, 11:32:37 pm »
Hi,

I've installed ebox with a pair of disk configured in raid1, with two partitions, one mounted in the root directory and another, the bigger one, in /home.

the home directories of the samba users already are in /home, and I wanted to reconfigure
the mail system to store mails in /home/vmail (analogous to the current location /var/vmail),

I've found the config files of dovecot (/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) and postfix
(/etc/postfix/main.cf) and the locations inside them where i can modify the default location,

my question is, any modification i made on those files will be overwritten by the ebox web interface? what should i be aware of?
would it be better to mount a new partition in /var?, that way i don't have to modify
anything, but is it a good idea?

thanks,
Alejandro.

Hi Alejandro,

These files are overwritten everytime the ebox-mail is restarted. So it'd better to modify the templates which are stored in /usr/share/ebox/stubs/mail. Take into account these files will be overwritten every upgrade, so keep a backup of your modifications.

My suggestion would be to have another partition for variables files (/var) or at least for /var/vmail if the server is going to act as a mail gateway.

Cheers,
My secret is my silence...

thanks for your answer,

i solved it in another way, i moved the /var/vmail directory into /home and created
a symolic link in /var pointing to /home/var

seems to work fine. is there any wrongdoing in this?

thanks for your help,

Alejandro.

Yeah this seems to be the best way to do it.

NB make sure you are backing up OK. The ebox backup doesn't follow links so you need to be sure your new directory is covered.
