Zentyal server Release Policy published!
« on: September 15, 2010, 06:02:25 pm »
Dear Community Members,

We're glad to let you know that we've just published the Zentyal Release Policy. As stated in the announcement, our aim is to define clearly the frequency and timetable, as well as the official support policy of the stable releases that we will follow from now on.

If you have any questions or doubts, please feel free to ask here!

Best regards,

Zentyal Development Team

Dear Zentyal Team,

I am currently evaluating Zentyal since our servers (currently running on ubuntu 6.04)
need a major update in the next months.

It is good to hear that you are switching to a dedicated release policy. :)

But as you base your system on Ubuntu Server LTS I think you should have a stable version
with at least security updates that is supported as long as ubuntu server. That means five
years. In professional business who really considers doing a major server update every 3
years? In my opinion, 5 years is allready hard. Have a look at Centos/RHEL, they have 12
years of security support.

Regards
Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your feedback! We most certainly agree that longer support period would be recommendable and we hope that in the near future we are able to extend our support period. Please note that this Release Policy is not carved in stone in the sense that when ever we can improve the conditions we offer for our users and customers, we will do so. We opted being rather conservative with our first Release Policy, promising only what is possible with current resources (maintaining simultaneously three stable Zentyal versions).

Best,

Heidi

(the changes are the ones under 2.0.1 and 2.0.2, the HEAD ones are not released yet)

The last paragraph in the Release Policy states
Quote
The Zentyal Development Team offers three years of support for the stable Zentyal versions. This means that since the publication of a stable Zentyal version, support for all security issues as well as commercial support and subscription services will be granted for this version during the next three years. After this time period, the stable version reaches its "end of life" date and becomes unsupported.
Does it apply to 1.4.2, which is a stable version, or only to 2.0 and onwards?
You will have a yearly stable release, each one independently supported for 3 years. Correct?

Yes, the second is correct. But it is applied only to 2.0 onwards, not 1.4.
