"Reinstall" Zentyal file server on new HW
« on: October 07, 2010, 01:12:04 pm »
Hi,
I want to move my Zentyal server to new hardware. Zentyal is configured as PDC domain controller (file server). Is this possible to transfer "PDC data&configuration" to new hw, without losing information of joined workstations (WinXPs), so that I don't have to rejoin all WinXPs?

Get the new HW first, set it up, and do the AD sync.

In other words, build the new server, and join it to the domain, and use AD synch (not sure on the exact name, but its the utility for doing just that).  Once you get the NEW server all up and running, and everybody moved over, then you can demote the existing PDC and promote the new server as the PDC.

AD sync is meant to sync with Windows server, not other Zentyal servers. You could be using a configuration backup to import config back on the new server.

Try this: http://doc.zentyal.org/en/backup.html#how-to-recover-from-a-disaster

And please let the forum know if this method worked for you!

Hi Tiss, thanks for replying. It's very difficult to get a reply on this forum  :-X

On my case, It's a migration. So this tutorial will not work.
I have a ebox 1.0 and want to copy all LDAP info + PDC SID to a new zentyal server.

Do you know any other tutorial?

Thanks in advance,
Josir

Unfortunately I have no experience with ebox 1.0. I've seen a thread on this forum somewhere that describes a succesful upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0. Now I'm just speculating, but perhaps you can find a way to do a two/three-stage upgrade: first from 1.0 to 1.5 and then 1.5 to 2.0? This document states that you can upgrade from 1.0 to 1.2.x smoothly: http://trac.ebox-platform.com/wiki/Document/Announcement/1.2, but it does not include instructions.

On another note, Zentyal 2.0 has a 'services restore' option which should restore the entire LDAP, but I doubt that you can backup your 1.0 and restore them in 2.0 without any problems.

Sorry if all this is too vague, I'm just proposing some ideas and keeping this thread alive. I'm hoping the Zentyal staff will chip in too, as I cannot imagine you being the first person ever trying to upgrade his ebox/Zentyal box.

Please update this thread if you work out a solution!
