Antivirus database update (freshclam) check fails / interrupted
« on: September 23, 2020, 08:29:54 pm »
Zentyal 6.2, core 6.2.3, module Antivirus 6.2.1, this is a fresh install in a VM
I noticed that emails are delivered as ***UNCHECKED*** due to the Antivirus not running.
Running freshclam as sudo produces the following error:

Wed Sep 23 20:25:21 2020 -> ClamAV update process started at Wed Sep 23 20:25:21 2020
Wed Sep 23 20:25:21 2020 -> daily database available for download (remote version: 25936)
Time: 4.7s, ETA: 0.0s [=============================>] 107.73MiB/107.73MiB
Wed Sep 23 20:25:29 2020 -> Testing database: '/var/lib/clamav//tmp.06d80/clamav-df1eaef7022f70c466b241c762cca72f.tmp-daily.cvd' ...
Wed Sep 23 20:25:43 2020 -> !Database load killed by signal 9
Wed Sep 23 20:25:43 2020 -> !Database test FAILED.
Wed Sep 23 20:25:43 2020 -> !Unexpected error when attempting to update database: daily
Wed Sep 23 20:25:43 2020 -> ^fc_update_databases: fc_update_database failed: Test failed (8)
Wed Sep 23 20:25:43 2020 -> !Database update process failed: Test failed (8)
Wed Sep 23 20:25:43 2020 -> !Update failed.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Note: Removing and re-installing the module did not fix the problem.

As an intermediate solution I turned of AV checking in Mail Filter to get rid of the "***UNCHECKED***" comment.

 :)

Did you check the workload of your server? Add some more RAM and check it one more time.

Good idea, I went from 1GB to 2GB.
Antivirus stil did not come up on its own, but running freshclam manually now finished and starting Antivirus manually also worked.

When switching the usage of Antivirus on in Mail-Filter, Antivirus stopped again. I had to start it again manually.
Currently it is still running, lets see for how long.

How much RAM is recommended for a Mail server with Mail-Filter and Antivirus and less than 10 Users?

Just checked the module status after some hours and zero email activity: Antivirus not running. Doesn't sound healthy, this should not happen.

Any further ideas?

So I went from 2GB to 3GB and Antivirus stays running and works.
It is a solution, but IMHO this is a lot of RAM for a Linux server just processing a few emails. I would not have expected Zentyal to be that memory hungry.

The ClamAV + SpamAssassin combination requires a lot of memory. In addition, Zentyal offers many services (some of them really heavies in RAM terms) Remove all the unused Zentyal modules and check your server workload statistics periodically (for instance, nmon http://nmon.sourceforge.net/pmwiki.php)
