Roadmap for eBox 2.0 available in our development trac
« on: April 07, 2010, 10:50:39 am »
Hi fellow community members,

Just to let you know that the roadmap for eBox 2.0 is already publicly available at http://trac.ebox-platform.com/roadmap. You will be able to keep of track the status of the implementation of each feature there.

I also want to clarify that the main change in this new version is the new base of the distribution. eBox 2.0 will be based on the new Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. It will come with new versions of all the software packages that eBox relies on. Also, this new distribution will greatly decrease the number of problems supporting new hardware.

As this main change is going to take us a lot of time, the amount of new features is lesser than in previous eBox releases. And, in fact, our efforts are also going to be centered in make the existing eBox features more robust.

Hello,

Congratulations on this great product, hope that future releases will bring more features and innovations and in the same time keep it's simplicity and stability.

Please fix the link pointing to trac (http instead of https) in the post http://www.ebox-platform.com/archives/2010/04/07/396-ebox-platform-2-0-roadmap-published/

Thanks for the excellent product you've been working on and I anxiously await the new release.  I noticed that 2.0 is due in 3 months and one of the goals listed is 10.04.  Is that to say that it should probably be about 3 months til 10.04 can be used with Ebox in it's entirety (not 1.5)?

Will the support for new hardware also extend to peripherals, specifically printers.  This is a longstanding issue which regularly crops up in the forum.  It is not mentioned as a separate feature in the roadmap for version 2, is it included as part of one of the listed features?

As this main change is going to take us a lot of time, the amount of new features is lesser than in previous eBox releases. And, in fact, our efforts are also going to be centered in make the existing eBox features more robust.
Will this extend to ebox-desktop (10.4) becoming a mainstream package rather than a proof of concept and coincide with the release of eBox v 2.0?

The two questions raised relate to existing eBox features; the decision to consolidate the progress made to date is one which I support.  Hopefully, the wider community will also register its support for this as it will provide the firmest foundation on which additional functionality may be added in the future.

I'm not sure if I understand your question. 1.5 is the transition branch from 1.4 to 2.0 and it's already based in 10.04 (although not all the packages are ready yet). Before releasing 2.0, there will be several 1.5 releases in between.

Well, eBox desktop is a different product, the published roadmap only affects to eBox platform. Eventually we will announce a roadmap for ebox-desktop once it is known.

Regarding the printers support, if there are new versions of the related packages (foomatic, cups...) in lucid, probably new printers will be supported. That's not an eBox issue as eBox relays on that software to make the printers work.

OK, I understand that it is a different product, but one with the single purpose of being used in conjunction with an eBox PDC.  This intimate link implies that a change in the server will generate a corresponding change in ebox-desktop.  The enquiry is really whether you foresee both the server and desktop software will be available at the launch of eBox 2.0.

Of course we will try to have ebox-desktop ready (and improved) for eBox 2.0, but we can't assure anything yet. In fact, we also plan to launch a version of ebox-desktop for windows clients but there is no date set yet.

I don't see any any reference to Zimbra or to Funambol in the roadmap for 2.0.
Are they going to be added?

The zimbra integration seems too complex, so it's not achievable for this release. Remember that the main change in these release is that we move from Hardy to Lucid and the priority is to stabilize all the existing features on the new system.

Funambol is something that we will like to integrate asap, but can't promise if it will be ready for 2.0.

Many thanks for your big effort.

What version 32 or 64 bits of Ubuntu 10.04 Server (Lucid) will relay eBox 2.0?

Our priority is the 32 bit version, but having also a 64 bit version is not discarded. Anyway, you can always install the 64bit version of Ubuntu Server and then install the eBox packages on it.

Is there enough time to add the automatic rule for creating DMZs?
