It can be operated via browser GUI, but you said some kinda desktop. A desktop depends no an OS GUI like GNOME and that, to me, is something that does not belong on a server.

no, that's a misunderstanding, I want to do this headless, the standard Sheeva and also Guruplug does not have X window installed (it can be done but what i read, it is difficult) As long installation and operation can be done headless and configuration via web GUI...this should work. So is it possible to install ebox on top of existing Ubuntu installation of Sheevaplug? If yes then there should  be only performance issues with some applications as code is not optimized for ARM, but it should run, maybe there are also issues like in this post explained http://forum.ebox-platform.com/index.php?topic=2345.0 . But it would be great if someone who knows eBox and also Linux better then me could provide some more insight whats the best way to attempt.

I'm trying to port eBox for running on a "KARO electronics Triton-ETN" processor module
- Linux version 2.6.11-mm2-dlm (no updates available :-/ )
- ARM IntelXScale-PXA255 rev 6 (v5l) 400 MHz
- 64MB RAM
- 32 MB internal Flash
- 2 GB external SD card
- smsc 100 MBit Ethernet LAN

If anyone has some experiences with porting eBox to ARM or running on low performance / low memory systems in general, please let me know.
I'm starting now building the RootFS. :-)

Btw. the system has a grayscale touchscreen, but I'm going to let it run headless first.

Hi,

Please tell me what the final verdict is. I need to order the plug computer (Guruplug server plus, http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/t-guruplugdetails.aspx#features
) and I wondering if I can install eBox or not

The guy (from Marvell)in this video is saying the box runs many distros including ubuntu(see 2:20 minutes, see also from 5:17  ubuntu screen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1Xl0Br3xuA

Thanks

I don't know what the verdict is. That's what I'm looking at myself actually; the Plus edition.

I am using Atom D510 to run ebox and they work great.  It makes a fantastic network appliance.  If you guys are looking for a small form factor unit that is the solution.

I measured the power use using my Kill A Watt meter and it uses 49 watts maximum.  Thats with 2 hard drives in the case.  The power use could be further decreased by using a better power supply (pico psu) however I'm pretty happy with 49 watts.

I just thought I would throw in my 2cents.

Thanks Ravis,

I have a use case that requires the box to  be plugcomputer or mini server. Could you please suggest a mini computer/server with   Intel Atom D510 1.6Ghz Dual core System

Thanks

I sure can.  I am using the Foxconn RS-233 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811153099&Tpk=rs-233

There are other cases available that fit this board.    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007583%20600006318&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

All of those cases fit ITX form factor boards.  I picked the RS-233 because it seemed to be the best of them.  Its also totally silent.

Those aren't ARM though. These should be topics for another thread.
