[4.0] Zentyal Components - is there a Glossary?
« on: November 01, 2014, 09:48:15 am »
I am just fooling around with 4.0 and I am inside of a Network which I can't fuck up, so I am a little hesitant to just click around through some stuff regarding network configuration.

The Titles of the "Zentyal Components don't go much into detail. Is there anywhere a glossary (4.0) that explains what exactly each component contains and what it does?

For example "Domain Controller and File Sharing" ... file sharing I guess will be samba3/4 somewhat, but not clear what Domain controlling does  ... so a glossary that explains the Components would be pretty useful for some.

Thanks, but appraently you got me wrong.

I am not looking for infos about samba 4. I am looking for an explanation what services/software are bundled up in the "Zentyal Components". And what these "Zentyal Components" actually do once you install them

EDIT: actually there was some kind of enlightenment in your post. It was just very indirect. ... already in the liner notes of the book you suggested is mentioned that apparently samba 4 (which probably is working in the "Domain Controller and File Sharing" on Zentyal [and maybe that's what you wanted to say without actually saying it]) already comes with a buid in domain control feature. But still that was only an example. thanks anyway

these componets are opensource, so I would look for informations for example Active Directory at Sernet   https://www.enterprisesamba.com/

you can also install webmin.com on the zentyal box, so you can see on https://machineip:10000  the installed modules and many more. for the ubuntu 14.04 you need the .deb
http://webmin.com/deb.html

very easy

thanks, but what it the point of using Zentyal and then use webmin to look into it? By the way ... if I am not mistaken ubuntu warns it's users to use webmin because it could 'harm the system' ... so I am not 100% sure whether it is advisable to play around with that

Webmin is ok to use, even on a Zentyal server, as long you refrain from altering Zentyal managed services.

But if you are afraid of messing up your live network, why not just create a separated subnet to test with Zentyal?
Even better: just use something like virtualbox and setup Zentyal in a different subnet on your workstation/laptop/whatever...
