zentyal backup feature
« on: June 13, 2014, 09:10:59 pm »
Hi all,

First off.. Zentyal.. AWESOME product!!!

i was looking at the built in backup feature of zentyal..still treading the waters here...

if i do say a RSYNC backup to a nas.. and i need to restor someday... how would that procedure work? is it a image backup it does of the entire harddrive or just a file backup? do i need to some initial work before rolling on the backup?

im talking about the case of a disastor restor.. new hardware and everything

Thanks

Casper

It's not a full backup, you'll need to install Zentyal on your new hardware, ensure you're updated to the same version as the backup and install all the same modules as the backup before restoring the backup.

You may be better off using something like Clonezilla weekly or even daily.

Casper,

I run Zentyal virtualised on Ubuntu 14.04 with KVM as an LVM partition then I can take a complete image of the Zentyal machine and use LVM snapshots while I test new upgrades etc.

I also use rsnapshot from the Ubuntu install to keep historical copies on different medium.

Hello Casper,

in a disaster recovery situation, you should need to install or reinstall the server with the same ISO version like the one used for the backups, and install the same modules you have before the disaster. Afterwards, you should need to import a configuration backup and then configure the backup module in order to allow you to restore the files through the Zentyal GUI from your NAS. You can also restore the files through the command line, here is a tutorial:

https://wiki.zentyal.org/wiki/Data_backups_with_Duplicity

I also send you a link to our official doc about the Zentyal Backup feature:

Regards ;)
