Weird fileserver issue

I have a Zentyal 3.2 server with the latest updates.
The server acts as Domain Controller, Gateway and File and Printserver.

I have created a share and can access that share through smb protocol with both linux (ubuntu 14.04 x64) and windows (windows XP) clients.

one of the directories inside the share has several subdirectories and files in it. The weird thing occurs that with the windows XP client I can see all files and directories, but with the linux client only a very limited part of the directories and files.

I checked all the file permissions and they are all the same for every directory!

This evening I also checked with another Ubuntu client from another location. I VPN-ed in and connected to the samba share. The same thing occurs: only a limited amount of directories and files are visible in Nautilus. However, when I check using terminal and SSH directly into the server I can see all files and directories with the ubuntu clients.

How can I troubleshoot this?

Hello robb,

did you try by checking the ACLs on the server side with the command "getfacl"? Also, I recommend you to directly test on the server side the command "smbclient" and check if you can browse the shared folders.

I am not that skilled with ACL's but when I do a getfacl <shareddirectory> I get the following response:

From the terminal on the server (SSH into the server via VPN) I connected to smb with smbclient command. It gave me this response:
When cd-ing into another directory I get an error that I highlighted. Might this be causing the strange behaviour? And how to fix this?

Hello robb,

the acls seems to be ok. Can you check by changing the file name "planing_for_the_roof,_tegels_and_methalic_menuserie.zip" to something like planingroof.zip (for example) and test it again?

Are there any known hard limits for amount of directories, amount of files and/or size?
This would be a serious showstopper to use samba with linux clients.

And why are windows clients not affected?

I'm not aware of a particular limit, so I guess this is a bug on the smbclient  package for Linux. I would suggest you submitting a bug report  to samba team
