Broadband eventually. 8 mins for the daily iso. So not great but hey can't be worse than that dongle.

Going to use VMware player and do some testing with the debug on.

Any guidance to where things are at?

Just a small advice: don't rush to an install with all enabled.
- HAmodule is a nice one to do some testing on.
- OpenChange module is also a nice one to check out.

Personaly I try to test with as little as possible modules activated at a time.

Thanks Robb,

Same here often just start with the networking module only.

Usually after than stage, DNS, DHCP, NTP.

Then from then its module of choice and totally agree.

Are you doing the community documentation?

If would you knock something about Beta-Testing best approach maybe something about logs of interest and location and all that?

My first one is after going slow and getting to the point of DNS, DHCP, NTP installed I was going to head for Samba.

In the Zentyal components I have a totally blank page with nothing available to install.

So I guess apt-cache search zentyal
root@zent1:~# apt-cache search zentyal
zentyal-common - Zentyal - Common Library
zentyal-objects - Zentyal - Network Objects
zentyal-dns - Zentyal - DNS Service
zentyal-firewall - Zentyal - Firewall
zentyal-dhcp - Zentyal - DHCP Service
zentyal-network - Zentyal - Network Configuration
zentyal - Zentyal - Core metapackage
zenbuntu-core - Zentyal Environment for Ubuntu Server
zentyal-core - Zentyal - Core
zentyal-services - Zentyal - Network Services
zenbuntu-desktop - Zentyal Desktop Environment for Ubuntu Server
zentyal-software - Zentyal - Software Management
zentyal-ntp - Zentyal - NTP Service

mmm Not a right lot there

deb http://archive.zentyal.org/zentyal 3.4 main extra

gonna have a search on the site on what apt repo's I am supposed to have?

Next File sharing which brings in users and groups.

Changed domain to zentyal.lan so zent1.zentyal.lan.

restarted

selected file sharing install went ok

enabled ok

restarted

New addition of the guest account. Disabled (didn't see 3.3 if it was there)

added an account zenadmin could choose a group so created and added to domain admins

Now going to see if I can add the host as a client. Bridge networking in vmplayer so should be easy.

So far not so good.

First hardware fault on my computer its been wifi for so long that even though the link light comes on and the driver and nic is shown in windows it doesn't detect a link.

So then some annoyed routing and cursing of where is that dual nic?

Usually its onboard + another but onboard seems up the swanny.

Anyway wasn't impressed with vmware player. Doesn't seem to be able to clone.

So thought whilst I was at it going to drop it for virtual box. (I did hear of some samba probs but who knows)

Re-installed zentyal.

This time after installing network didn't have to do a apt-get update ?!

Installed dns, dhcp, ntp and firewall.

changed domain name rebooted.

On reboot hangs a bit and gives a network error.

cant access webadmin

ifconfig my wan (dhcp) no ip
lan 192.168.3.1 ok

browser https://local host no go

ifdown eth0
ifup eth0
nothing

browser https://192.168.3.1
no go

ping 192.168.3.1

worked with vmplayer ?! can't of got the nics backwards doh dunno

weird dunno why but because I had a pro mt1000\ server adapter being emulated as a pro mt1000\ server adapter dunno why but I changed it to the pcfast-netIII

boot works fine and dhcp worked this time on my other host port as a client.

software module not modules to install
apt-get update

then install file sharing users & groups comes along.

Ok after a lot of faffing!

Nothing to do with zentyal. Dodgy nic and a funny one with virtual box I never had before.

Samba4 is up and running.

I did forget to set ntp in the dhcp module to local zentyal
important as kerb is time based and being in time with your server is more important than being in time. (think its a time based salt but dunno)

anyway when I logged in as the local user. switched users and tried to log into the domain
Failed.
Sometimes it seems to do this, maybe because windows starts then you run the vm.
so I disabled and enable the lan nic to refresh the dhcp and that also the ntp settings would this time work

logged on
I have a home of h:
and due to my memory from last night users home is \\servername\%user% doh but my memory is special ok

did do anything with group policies but will have a go later

added a share "itsashare" and it worked with files copied

so heading to openchange

there is one bit here that I am confused about and I am going along the lines that ddns is included in samba4 so I am not enabling it the dhcp.
I dunno :)

Sogo & Openchange.

Couple of core and other updates from zentyal so I do them.
also ubuntu updates so do those

choose openchange server and openchange webmail in one go!

Okay didn't get any errors but prob should now read instructions

webserver doesn't seem to be doing anything but this might be due to the http https proxy, but like a somebody elses problem field, I ignored it.

same with outlook

and after typing //192.168.3.1/ /webmail /mail /sogo /openchange ah ha /SOGo should of made it all lower case users are dumb.

Anyway documentation....

didn't read the documentation

just restarted the server

getting the mail server name right always help zent1.zentyal.lan and not zentyal.zentyal.lan

To be honest I am really disappointied. I didn't have to reference the documentation well apart from SOGo which I am not sure about

Personally mr kerihuel I think you should be ashamed as this is not beta testing! There was no black box with levers. No red boxes and no screen shots of errors to send.

To say that I am most disappointed is an understatement of the highest degree and I presume I shall have to get drunk for the weekend!

PS apols about the email never thought of that bare in mind I sent it to myself. I know therapy is on thursdays.

So far the experience has been fairly painless but good quality microsoft methods are a sure foundation to a stable system.

I guess I better be off an test some of that linux dross :)

On a more serious note 3.4 seems to be taking shape. In fact it looks very much like a working package as far as I can tell.

Maybe instead of 3.3 http://sourceforge.net/projects/zentyal/files/Incoming/ and give it a go.

Still playing and an odd one.

I added another Nic to the hardware.

I am trying to set a static address and every time I click change it just reverts back to "Not Set"

Damned if I can set another static address.

Also I re-installed zentyal after my samba and openchange as I was going to tempt fate with HA.

So this brings me to that third nic.

Not sure what I am doing but my thoughts went that HA asks for a NIC to communicate on.
My thought path went along the lines that this shouldn't be one that is used for lan or wan and is under HA.

if that makes any sense I am stuck because I can't seem to assign a static address.

Also in services I noticed a sneaky entry of http services but you don't seem to be able to do anything with it titled Zentyal Administration port and other reverse proxy service ports

will leave it at that for now

Strange if I set it to dhcp it works. Then if I try and set a static now it reverts to dhcp.

node1
So I would have the wan on the dhcp assigned
Lan on 192.168.3.1
HA comms on 192.168.3.2 if it could be set

node2
So I would have the wan on the dhcp assigned
Lan on 192.168.3.4
HA comms on 192.168.3.5 if it could be set

With a floating IP on 192.168.3.9

Still not sure about externals via DHCP

Also dunno if I missed something somewhere but until I do a google I am ok with the forms of Nic Type/Setup

But what is bundled?

Ah should of just clicked I presumed bonding would be part of the trunk options.

Its just good old bonding which is great to see in Zentyal.

I always post ebay & uk concentric but its just a price guide.

When talking about 10GbE or FC it is also good to keep an open mind to cost effective quad or dual port nics that can be bonded.

Only problem with bonding is the amount of pci-x slots you might require.

I did have a habit of trying to provide relatively small matx solutions but of late I am looking for more pci-x slots.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-436431-001-Quad-PORT-PCI-EXPRESS-NIC-NC364T-F-H-/360871461931?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCards&hash=item54059d842b

Also just while I wake up with a coffee I noticed 1gb is the maximum downstream rate are they asymmetric?
