Any easy to set up cloud backup services?
« on: September 24, 2013, 05:30:16 pm »
Just curious as the Zentyal cloud is still in beta last I saw.  Has anybody used any specific cloud plugins or installations on 3.2 and later?  I've been out of the Zentyal game for a little bit, but having another look at it.  I'd say I'm an intermediate skill level.  I'm looking for something I can provide to my smaller clients that will just give them a central place to store their files, and back it up to a cloud service of some kind.  The other things Zentyal does are just a bonus.

You can install owncloud [1] on the zentyal box. I'ts easy and you can enable the ldap authentication plugin (owncloud plugin) to make your zentyal users login to owncloud.

You can install owncloud on the zentyal box.

Sure (I'm happily running OwnCloud myself) but service level is quite different except from very end-user's level viewpoint.
With hosted cloud (which is the cloud concept BTW), as admin you benefit from what your service provider provides in term of backup, scalability.

OwnCloud name is somewhat misleading: if you don't implement OwnCloud client (client side), this is no more than web based application hosting files.
Notice I'm very happy with it  :)  but I'm fighting against this "cloud" concept that is not real cloud  8)

By cloud I just mean offsite.  I hate the term as well but it's currently "what sells" :-)  Basically I want an offsite backup capability that isn't carbonite.

"off-site backup" is much clearer to me.
Still I don't have any magic solution.
Furthermore, right solution may depend on various criteria like amount of data, amount of changes per period, how often you want to backup and even more critical, what's your plan in term of restore.
Basically, is it backup for DRP or backup to save data with willingness to restore "per file" ?

Have a look at s3cmd works well and easy to setup. Run from a cron job.
A amazon s3 account will be needed , very cheap offline / cloud storage.

I have just the thing you are asking for. You can go for the Cloudways as it automatically backups your server and you can also set the time to automate the server backups. I am currently using it as the magento cloud hosting option. So, I can tell you from my experience that it really ease the job for you.
