Official documentation for eBox 1.2 available (yay!)
« on: August 18, 2009, 12:14:29 pm »
Dear users! We are happy to announce the immediate availability of our official documentation for eBox 1.2.

We hope that you find it useful and it improves your eBox experience :)

We would also like to ask you for your help. If you see any part that can be improved, either because concepts can be explained better or you think a more appropriate example can be provided or the English is plain wrong, let us know in this post and we'll do something about it :)

Well, enough with the talk, doc is at http://doc.ebox-platform.com/en/ and other documentation and other languages available at http://trac.ebox-platform.com/wiki/Document/Index.

According to the Cambridge English Dictionary functionalities (opening page) is not an English word, perhaps functions might be more appropriate.

I am more of a Merriam-Webster guy, and functionality appears there as:
"the particular set of functions or capabilities associated with computer software or hardware or an electronic device"
and as far as I know is widely used in technology, e.g.: http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2SE/Desktop/javase6/systemtray/
"New System Tray Functionality in Java SE 6"

I am more of a Merriam-Webster guy...
Each to his own.

functionality appears there...
"functionality" (singular) appears in both the Oxford and Cambridge Dictionaries but "functionalities" (as plural) does not.  Its just an example of the mangling of English.

Does it help to consider it from the following perspective?
  • Functionality = a unit comprising multiple capabilities
  • Functions = an indication of multiple capabilities

Either way its not a major issue, just a case of 'tidying up'.

It will make it easier to understand if all the notes ([1], [2]...) are grouped together at the foot of the page rather than appearing within the main body of the text.

Do the notes need to be numbered?  Could the text itself be made into a link to the appropriate note?

Good work!

In the first paragraph under Installation, should the second sentence read, "This does not prevent you from installing other unmanaged services, but these must be manually configured" (change in bold)?

 ;) Fantastic documentation!

Thanks for taking the time and effort to prepare and share this!

Will def help me and others a lot who are beginning to use ebox/ubuntu for various scenarios.

Well done again.

On the page http://doc.ebox-platform.com/en/intro.html#installation the paragraph "In the second case, you need to add the official eBox Platform repositories and to install the packages you are interested in." is incorrect as /etc/apt/sources.list contains the required entries by default.

It means that if you are using a standard Ubuntu Server, not the eBox installer, you have to add the eBox repositories manually...
(Unless you want to use ebox 0.12 that is the one included in the official Ubuntu repositories)

...ebox 0.12 that is the one included in the official Ubuntu repositories)
I thought (wrongly) that as eBox is based on the LTS version of Ubuntu that newer releases of eBox made it into the official Ubuntu repositories.

I recall an earlier release of eBox (1.0?) did not have a full /etc/apt/sources.list and that this comment in the doc referred to this.

I'm talking nonsense here by mixing up two unrelated matters.  I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

As the only way to install eBox from the Ubuntu official CD-ROM requires the manual additions might it be worthwhile showing the details in the official eBox doc?

The official doc for installing eBox is here: http://trac.ebox-platform.com/wiki/Document/Documentation/InstallationGuide

In the manual it only appears in an introductorial way. But yes, maybe you are right and we should add it. But I don't like to have repeated information in several places. It's harder to maintain.

I fully agree with this.  Perhaps this raises a question about the relationship between the Official Documentation for v 1.2 and the other guides in the wiki.

Is it possible to display the entire manual in one page, so it can be easily printed?

Thanks.

Giminy Christmas!

Good job!  I'm going thru it right now. The backup section even goes so far as to explain how to install the second disk..  Very extensive. I'm impressed!

Just some things I noticed. You did ask to let you know..  ;)

Web data publication service - May want to change Cliente to Client

routing says - destinatino instead of destination

Is the below statement true? I've not used postgrey in quite some time.., but did not think it blacklisted them, just whitelisted good guys..
"However, the servers that send spam do not usually follow the standard. They will not try to send the email again and eBox will include them in a black list."
