Need help with distro selection
« on: February 28, 2008, 07:22:51 pm »
Hello

I look forward to trying out ebox as it appears to be exactly what I am looking for.  My question is what Distro to use.  I saw on the site to use debian Sarge.  I went to download it, and it was 3 DVD's http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r3/i386/iso-dvd/

Is the correct one?  Can I use Ubuntu server instead without any problems?

Thanks for all your input.

You can use use Ubuntu server and install ebox on top. Here is how to http://forum.eboxplatform.com/index.php?topic=77.0
And here you can find install or live cd http://ebox-platform.com/download . It's based on sarge distro and you will have ebox up and running in a minute.

Hello Marko

Thanks for the help.

I tried the installer they offered but for some reason, I can not get it to work in my local network.  My internal IP's are 192.168.0.x but ebox installer uses 10.0.2.15 address.  Interesting, i can access the internet, but not my local netwrok.  So I changed it to a static IP and now i could not access anything internally or externally.

I'm trying all this within virtualbox for testing.

I also tried the ubuntu server, but for some reason once it was installed, when it tried to boot up i got a panic code and said CPU was too old.  (AMD X2 dual core).

Im going to try ubuntu on my server under virtualbox and see what happens there.

thanks for your help.

I might add that a test Ubuntu hardy version is under way, see this thread at ubuntuforums.org:

Andreas, read chapter 6 of the Virtualbox manual to learn how to set up your virtual network. It sounds like you are using what Virtualbox calls "NAT" (qemu calls this "user mode") when you want to use what Virtualbox calls "Host Interface Networking" (i.e. bridging).
