[Solved] NTP spamming the syslog; permission denied.
« on: November 18, 2012, 06:45:53 am »
I've just installed my first Zentyal 3.0 server at a client's shop. It wasn't easy but in the end all is running.
There are some minor issues however, starting with this ntp issue:

Code: [Select]
Nov 18 00:35:46 server ntpd[3723]: ntpd 4.2.6p3@1.2290-o Tue Jun  5 20:12:08 UTC 2012 (1)
Nov 18 00:35:46 server ntpd[3724]: proto: precision = 0.102 usec
Nov 18 00:35:46 server ntpd[3724]: ntp_io: estimated max descriptors: 1024, initial socket boundary: 16
Nov 18 00:35:46 server ntpd[3724]: unable to bind to wildcard address 0.0.0.0 - another process may be running - EXITING
Nov 18 00:36:09 server ntpd[4998]: process_private: failed auth mod_okay 0
Nov 18 00:36:09 server ntpd_intres[5023]: ntp_intres.request: permission denied
Nov 18 00:36:09 server ntpd[4998]: process_private: failed auth mod_okay 0
Nov 18 00:36:09 server ntpd_intres[5023]: ntp_intres.request: permission denied
Nov 18 00:36:09 server ntpd[4998]: process_private: failed auth mod_okay 0
Nov 18 00:36:09 server ntpd_intres[5023]: ntp_intres.request: permission denied

I made sure every instance of the NTP service was killed before restarting, but I cannot get rid of it. Reboot does not solve it.
Any tips would be welcome.

Cheers.

What I suggest is that once you have rebooted your server, restart NTP service via dashboard. You may have also to restart DNS service.
I found something related to this error some month ago but can't find it anymore. However, I think I wrote something about it in this forum. I'm still searching.

Thanks Christian, restarted the service on the dashboard and today there were a lot of updates...
I do not know what did it, but at this moment the issue has been solved! No more NTP spam in the syslog.

Cheers.

If I remember well, there is something related to NTP starting before DNS server or something like this, reason why there is no more error when you restart it manually.

Confirmed, restarting ntp from zentyal dashbord solve the issue.
