[SOLVED] "Advanced" network scenario....
« on: November 10, 2012, 07:53:10 pm »
Hi,

I just downloaded and installed Zentyal on my old laptop, which I was planning to use as a firewall-router.
The machine has two network interfaces, an ethernet card, which I use to connect to the internet, and a wireless network card, which I was planning to turn into a wireless access point.
Although Zentyal installs and runs without any problem, I cannot find any way to access the the web-based configuration interface...

Installing lynx to access the configuration page (https://[localhost] , right?) from the console or connecting the ethernet port to another computer through a direct link didn't solve the issue... any good suggestion?

Cheers,

Blue

If you have installed Zentyal on a laptop then logging in on that laptop will start Firefox loading https://localhost
There you log in once again and you will see the web adminpage.

If you want to access the webgui from another machine, connect the Zentyal system to a switch with your internal interface. Make sure the pc you are using to connect to the Zentyal server is connected to that switch too and configured to use the same subnet. Accessing the webgui is easy enough: Start Firefox and go to https://<ip-of-zentyal> and you will be prompeted for a login.

Why using lynx while Firefox is default available in Zentyal?

btw, this is quite standard and hardly considered 'Advanced' :P

Dear robb,

thanks a lot for your answer.

Just to clarify things, I installed the 64 bit version of Zentyal using the image linked from the installation guide's web page (http://trac.zentyal.org/wiki/Documentation/Community/Installation/InstallationGuide), which is (I guess) based on Ubuntu Server 12.04 and, as such, it doesn't come with any preinstalled GUI (hence, no Firefox).

Of course, I tried to type the suggested address "https://localhost" as well as "https://zentyalap" (the name I gave to my local host), getting "connection refused" as the only answer. Am I missing anything? Do I need to specify any port (e.g. https://localhost:123)?

Concerning the hub/switch solution: I - unfortunately - don't have any, so I directly connected my desktop to the Zentyal laptop through an ethernet cable, configuring the network on both sides (Zentyal: 192.168.1.1, desktop 192.168.1.2). While the two computers ping correctly, any attempt to connect to the web interface returns a "server not found" message.

Any guess about what could be wrong?

Blue

PS: the "Advanced" (with quotation marks on) was meant to be ironic...

Hi blue_sky

The Zentyal installer does come with Firefox. If Firefox isn't launched automatically after you log in on the server, something went wrong with your installation.

Can you elaborate a bit more on how you configured Zentyal on the server? Did you mark any of the adapters as external?

Did you use a cross cable for the direct connection between the server and the workstation?
Maybe you can add the server in the hostfile of the workstation, however, you should be able to access the webgui through the IP address of the server.

Hm.
You were right: something went wrong during the installation phase.

I loaded Zentyal on a USB pendrive using the latest UNetbootin and selected the default choice from the boot menu: the installation went through as I was installing the standard Ubuntu 12.04 server, with its own color scheme, and the system didn't have any of the features you mentioned, including - but not limited to - the X server. And no, I didn't even get to configure the adapter as internal or external.
I repeated the installation specifically choosing "Install Zentyal 3.0": this time went fine, the system booted correctly and it opened the X session.

Concerning the ethernet cable: yes, it was a cross cable.

Thanks again for your support,

Blue
