Wifi Card On Zentyal
« on: August 23, 2011, 01:55:43 pm »
Hi, I am looking at attaching a Wifi card directly to zentyal, such that there is no need for cables, all clients connect wirelessly to the zentyal server, Is this attainable and how?

Hello Rotimi,

You may add a WiFi NIC to your Zentyal without any problem.

My 2 pennies;
You would be better using a regular RJ45 NIC along with a WiFi enabled router configured in bridge mode.  It would be more reliable, faster and easier to manage.

Best,

Marcus

f.i. DD-WRT enabled router will provide much more service and flexibility assuming you clearly understand where to run what (e.g. running DHCP from this WiFi access point might have pros and cons compared to DHCP relaying).
Putting the antenna at the right place will also be easier and more flexible :)

agree,  and  for addition:  sutch a  wifi AP (access point),  is mainly aready installed and configured  with the riw right settings an drivers.   running  most ubuntu  wifi cards  will cause issue  when running in  AP-mode...

and since you can already  obtain a  wifi app at low prices  it could be potentially  better to use that instead,
especially when you deside your want  more AP's later on (for extended range).

Well, as for me, I'd like to avoid multiple boxes such as SFF computer for Zentyal, Wireless AP and its power adaptor and NAS and its own power adaptor etc. It seems to me it will be more reliable to use an all-in-one solution so now I'm working on building an Zentyal-based all-in-one WiFi-enabled server/router using a Fujitsu-Siemens SFF desktop. Hope this forum will be a good help/idea source :)
PS sorry if my English is poor for it's not my native language

avoiding more than one power adaptor is a nice idea but its really hard to gain ...

you will need a dedicated antenna  for example a  6dba  one with a rather long cable  to not get conection problems.. also  compiling  AP-enabled linux drivers into ubuntu  is not considered a verry good idea, an than still...

im not sure why you want an aditional nas next to your zentyal box (als its  samba server is quite suitable fo r sharing files on your network...

from a technical point of you id strongly advice you to  still use an external access point   (not a router)...  that in ideal situation supports  radius.... (to intergrate wireless acount management with zentyal... |
(almost all wrt (linksys, asus, netgear) access points support this feature).

As for WiFi adapter, I've got a MIMO-enabled D-Link DWA-547 with three antennas, so I'm sure there will be no problem with range at least within my apartment  ;) . And of course I'll use a 1,5TB HDD which I'll install into my Zentyal PC so I'll avoid dedicated NAS. But I want to avoid stand-alone AP (although I've got an ASUS WL-500 GP v2, which can be used in AP mode apart of gateway mode). If I face some unresolvable problem(s) I'll surely use it  ;)
