Zentyal file service (samba?) doesn't start

From the administration panel of Zentyal the file service is stopped and if I press the button to activate it Zentyal says that it doesn't start for an error and to see the log files. ay you help me to find the appropriate log files and to solve the problem? From when I hve the problem I can't see the saba file shares on the network so I suppose it may be a problem related to samba.

Hi Massimo,

The samba log files are in
/var/log/samba

But you may also find information in the syslog
/var/log/syslog

seems that this is an old problem but I have no /usr/share/zentyal-users folder so I can't execute reinstall.

I did nothing to the server, it was an automatic Zentyal update to do this disaster.

What version are you running? Is this a fresh install or was the issue introduced later?
Is it an upgrade?
Perhaps with a little more info we can figure it out.

Version core is 2.0.23.
I installed Zentyal about 1 year ago and it worked with no problems until 2 weeks ago then the cpu load went to 100% (logs show more then 100%) blocking every service in practice so I killed the blocking processes after waited for about 8 hours they completed (yes, about 8 hours to 100% cpu time).

Then after restarting Zentyal I obtained: "kernel panic not syncing vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)".

I wasn't able to find a solution in the short term so I decided to use the previous release (I mean that at startup you can choose what Zentyal/Linux core release you can start pressing shift during grub startup).

In this way I was able to use my applications (mainly Atlassian web servers applications, every application running in a different Tomcat instance to have more freedom to update and services problems.

The problem is that often I am abroad so I need to see the company network especially the shared disks. When I saw it was impossible I understood that the problem is samba/user management related and I see they both aren't in execution and I am not able to restart them. I found a lot of suggestions to restart samba and user management but in my situation didn't help also I haven't some folders as described in the suggestions (needed to restart samba).

at the moment I am quite blocked (in the sense I have no perfect solution) so I am trying to establish a secure VPN and remote desktop to be able to better service the server also when I am abroad.

Of course every help is very welcome.

Do sudo /etc/init.d/ebox users restart and check slapd is running first.

Already done but without any effect. It doesn't restart. Sees that LDAP/samba and user's authentications can't be started.
