Window Client Cannot Find Server at Login (most of the time)

Here's one that has me scratching my head. 

I have a windows client that I was able to join to the domain without any issues.

The problem is that when the user tries to login, they get an error message stating that the domain/server cannot be found.

the interesting part is that when I try to log into the local machine, even unsuccessfully, and then return to login to the domain, everything works fine. 

What am I missing here?
